I've read from a few people that they do not pay for a dubious electric rustproofing module, but that they have used traditional spray on methods. So here's a survey:

    1. Have you used an undercoat rust product?
    2. What specific products you've had luck with?
    3. Did you DIY or have it done at a garage?

    1. cars are already electro coated in the factory
    2. cans of undercoating if you want
    3. spray oil on the underneath and in doors once a year if you live in the rust belt.

Lotsa info on here about that. Search for fluid film on TW.

Good info in here. Also has a pic of my old jeep with minimal rust. Proof that oil spray does work:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rust-proofing.541406/

    Fluid film thread here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-fluid-film-your-3rd-gen.455241/

Fluid film and krown are proven.

Doing yourself is always better if you have the patience and you must drill holes into your doors. Otherwise taking it yearly is the way to go. Apply it in the heat of the summer.

I live in coastal Nova Scotia. Unprotected cars do not last here. Almost every vehicle I have bought in the last 10 years for the wife and I, have been undercoated/paint protected by the same dealer. 3 Hyundai's, and 2 Toyota's. Had the two 08 Hyundai's for 6 years, and the bodies were perfect on trade in. Not a sign or hint of corrosion. It's not oil, its more of an asphalt undercoat. Its a matte black and they cover the entire under carriage. I get annual inspections for 10 years to touch it up. Even my shiny yellow Bilstein shocks are coated in the stuff.

The main reason I keep going back to it is that when I had my first car in for its first annual inspection, a guy pulled in with a 98 tercel to get his final undercoating inspection. The body on that thing was immaculate. I had never seen a 10 year old car in my area without holes in it. He had driven the piss out of it for 10 years. Never washed it, just kept the undercoating updated.

I go to Napa and buy 20 litre or 5 gallon pail of dripless oil based undercoat which is not supposed to hurt rubber materials available in either gold or black colors . I use a spray attachment with a hose nipple at the end on my compressor (available at any hardware or parts store fairly cheap) and a clear hose put into a smaller plastic container. ( I drill a small hole in the cap to accomadate the hose) I then spray entire underside ( blow it right into frame channels etc.) and spray into doors with the drain holes at bottom. You can see the oil vapors coming out the various holes at top. If it is an older vehicle with rust, you can mix the dripless oilspray with hydraulic oil to give it more creep value and soak into the metal. If it is a new truck or clean , I would put it on straight from the pail. One pail probably would do at least 15 to 20 sprays and very cost effective at around $85 Canadian when on sale in the fall of year when people usually underspray vehicles here in Canada where they use lots of salt.

I'm curious on this topic as well. I just moved to Michigan from Tennessee. I hoping to protect my new 2018 before my first winter here.

I like doing things myself as you can control when you want it done (closest to winter as possible) and the amount of oilspray you use as well as the areas to put it in. On some cars I have removed tail lights and trunk inner liners to get the product into the hidden places which is fairly easy and I don't like drilling holes as some shops do. Cars always seem to rust badly where the metal body connects to the plastic bumpers ( salt gets trapped into the seams. I have seen many 15 plus year vehicles with a great body and no rust using these products. The only negative is that it is usually messy to work on underneath if you do repairs but oil does wash off.

I've used RustChek and Krown oil sprays. Coat vehicle every fall.

Currently on my 17' Taco I went with the LineX "permanent" undercoat. It's like a rubber thats coated on. 10 year warranty with free yearly check ups.

15314960555532131873481.jpg I really like this stuff so far, it does not make the truck smell like a chemical factory and dries enough to not get all over you if you work on it, holds up really well too.

All done at the respective locations. RustChek and Krown was $140 (Canadian) for a 4 door sedan when I had my Fusion.

The LineX was $500. Although it was free because the guy who owns it felt bad for me after I got fucked by a similar "permanent" spray I got from a company the dealership uses. I can tell you that story of you really want to here it. Lol. Kinda long.

Here's a pic I took to see my CV angle but it kinda shows what the spray looks like. IMG-20180623-WA0002.jpg

Allows the oil to properly absorb into the metal components.

I've never rust proofed a vehicle and never will.

Lots of people ike fluid film and if you do a search you will find threads on how to do it.

What vendrakk said. Plus, the dust/dirt glues to the vehicle, and forms a barrier that holds the oil against the metal.

If you want to go crazy, oil spray in the summer and fall for the first couple years.

Not sure if you looked at the pic of my jeep linked above. It's proof this method works. Post 7.

Where i live, salt plus some other corrosive mix is put on so heavy during January and February, that it' like driving pebbles. Every day. Cars that don't get oiled rust in about 5 years.

Look on Google for the fluid film undercoating kits, they come with a spray gun and a few pails of FF. I do it usually may/june and then end of oct/nov. Just got a 5gal bucket , should last me a few years
