It wouldnt really do anything. the ratio or new cars with the technology vs old cars with out it is like a 1:100000000 ratio and even if the government mandated this people would bitch and moan on the basis of emergency situations.

Now what should be done is have the cell phone companies have a special GPS that cannot be turned off, and when the phone hits a certain mph cancel out all calls except emergency ones. Not sure hot they would specify driver vs passengers but that is what they make the big bucks right?

People get new phones far quicker than new cars.

Tourism towns are tough to work in. I wish I could pull more traffic, but the call load for patrol sucks....there are low priority calls just coming in left and right and we are expected to respond to them before traffic...as traffic is a low priority for patrol, lower then calls for service.

An imbecilic thread, though seemingly popular :(

Posted this pic long ago in regards to a similar thread................texting owner of the folded truck died, along with a student on the bus.

    I agree.

I asked a deputy about this...and his reply was very simular to your post.

"can't watch out for every idiot driver when we are busy breaking up fights and responding to neighbors with barking dogs"

and the state police are usually only here when there is a large accident on the state hwy...or a drug bust. although those state leo guys will pull you over and ticket you for speeding in your red corvette. :frusty:

    Never.

Maybe just my age, but. I can live without communicating every second of the day. Hell, most people can't even make it through the checkout line it seems. Seriously, how important are these people?

I don't believe the cell phone manufacturers or service providers should be involved.

the issue is vehicle operation and should be handled by law enforcement.

Are we the public willing to pay to have a task force in place for such a task though?

Because the public can't handle it themselves, LEO's have to get involved...

And no, the public likes their smart phones too much.

It's a pick your poison kinda deal with LEO. They can't enforce all the laws and we shouldn't expect them to enforce all the laws.

They can only do so much and they can only have enough bodies. I don't blame LEO's when they take long to respond to a call. They have priority levels.

No...we should expect them to be able enforce all the laws.
Having such an expansive collection of laws with as many loopholes as exist does nothing to help us. A simple set of basic laws that can apply in a wide variety situations. IE - Reckless driving covers all of the things people do behind the wheel (overzealous hand banging radio sing alongs, shaving, speed, txting, etc). No need to try to come up with MORE laws...
