If I’m shopping for a truck and I see a 2021 with a wreck on the car fax, I’m passing over it. I don’t care how good the deal is. People on here can laugh about me demanding a new truck but I promise you’ll run into more headaches keeping this than you will getting rid of it or at least trying to get a replacement. I’ve had two wrecked trucks in my life and they were NEVER the same after they were “fixed”. No shop can replicate what the factory can do when it was built. I don’t care what anyone says.

Nothing about stamping my feet. I wouldn’t be driving a brand new wrecked truck. Screw that.

Beat up is one thing. Showing you got t-boned on the carfax is another. Wrecked is wrecked, Tacoma or not. That’s going to haunt you whenever you try to sell it or trade it down the line trust me.

My old 2000 Tacoma was mangled pretty bad in an accident, the frame was bent to the point where it pushed the floor all the way up to the clutch pedal. You are 100 percent correct in that it never drove the same after they repaired the body and frame damage. At the end of the day it's up to the insurance companies whether they decide to repair or total it though.

If it wasn’t a less than 1 year old truck I wouldn’t be as adamant about getting a replacement. I’m not sure if he bought his truck straight out or if it’s financed, but if it’s financed then he could potentially be in a mess. You loose so much value the first year (even a Tacoma) and now he’s going to lose even more value from a wreck. He hasn’t had time to build up much equity in the truck if it’s being financed.

So when the insurance company says no to your demand, what is your next step to get a new truck? We all know your only option is to walk away with your tail between your legs cause there's no way in hell an insurance company is going to buy you a new truck.
Please don't use the "I'm going to get a lawyer" statement. Cause we all know any insurance company's legal team will beat us down like the peasants we are.

Car fax reports don't describe accidents, they just say accident(s) or no accident. Not like it says fender bender or t-boned. If an insurance claim is made over a certain amount, it goes on the report. If repairs are paid with cash, nothing will show up on the car fax, so don't trust them too much. DV claims are done exactly for the purpose of compensating you for the loss in value. You get the money now, to offset the loss when you try to sell it or trade it later. There's really no "haunting" down the line.

You really don't know what you're talking about. I purchased my Tacoma less than a year ago, it's financed with $0 down. I already have $4k positive equity in the truck. The market is crazy now, especially for pick up trucks. Again, DV claims make up for the lost value...so there is no lost value.

I wouldn't put much faith in Car Fax either way. I hit a deer a couple of years ago that resulted in damage to the drivers side front, fender and door skin. Body and trim damage only, no mechanical or glass damage whatsoever. the report shows moderate to severe damage to the front, left cab left bed and rear.
I tried to appeal the listing and sent them the repair bill and photos twice but they kept asking for more information without telling me specifically what it was they were looking for. This was after I told them that was everything I had several times.

Depends on the insurance company you’re dealing with. Some will even demand you take it to their pre-approved shops and good luck with that sketchy work. Actually carfax does show where a vehicle was hit, auto check does too. He’s already filed an insurance claim so it will definitely be reported to carfax, he’s not paying out of his pocket.

I know exactly what I’m talking about. You’re currently benefiting from a hot market, but if that market changes in the next 6-12 months that 4K in positive equity could vanish once the market stabilizes. You have 4K in positive equity in a truck that hasn’t been wrecked, if your truck had been wrecked you can kiss that positive 4K goodbye.

Yours isn’t a 2021 though. A wreck report on a 2004 wouldn’t scare me too much (depending on other factors in the report). I would take a chance on a wrecked 04 before I ever would a wrecked 2021.

Car faxes are garbage. I had my Titan repaired through a large shop the insurance company uses. When I sold the truck I disclosed the accident and provided the buyer with the paperwork and guarantee from the shop. Buyer wanted a Carfax and it showed nothing. I contacted CarFax and they blamed the shop. Thankfully the buyer did not care.

I can take a repair to any ASE certified body shop in CA of my choosing. The insurance cannot legally force me to use their body shop.

It won't vanish that quickly since the Tacoma keeps a high residual, no matter what type of market. That is also 6-12 months of additional payments to bring down the debt on the vehicle. Again, you are ignoring the DV claim payout.

I should be getting my 2017 TRD Sport back from the body shop tomorrow after 10k in repairs. I am trying to decide if I am keeping it or trading it for a 4Runner. I am leaning towards keeping it as there was no frame damage. Most of the damage was to the tow hitch, rear bumper and tail gate. Like others have stated I am filing for a DV claim but I am starting to think I am going to get screwed since the person who hit me only has 10k liability on his coverage
