Do you think it is rude if someone answers the phone at a meal with a few friends and has a conversation the whole time with 1. not offering to call the person on the phone back later as to entertain the people at the meal 2. not stepping away and come back shortly later , give me all the reasons you think this is rude or not, or how the situation could have been better.

Yes, it's rude to the people you're eating with. Tell the person you're busy and if it's important, excuse yourself to talk on the phone. It's common courtesy to the people with you and the other patrons of the restaurant.

ah I see-well that person should know this-there may be a "cool" factor in this person who cuts the call short because they feel "family time" matters. People who express "priorities" such as "family" or "dinner" times as important to them, actually come off to peers as someone who has their sh+t together:)
I totally feel ya on this one

    Rude.

If you're caller ID shows your boss or something like that, and you need to answer, you excuse yourself (depending on the situation. I've answered at the table if I knew it would be a 2-3 sentence call, and if it goes longer I excuse myself), go to a hallway or lobby and talk briefly. Then you come back and spend time with the people who are with you.

Talking on the phone the whole time you are hanging out with someone, you might as well just tell them, "Hey, I actually have someone I'd rather spend my time on but I feel obligated to keep my plans with you." Wow, thanks.

I had a date once answer his phone during dinner (on a 1st date no less), and talk for 10 minutes. Then he told me, "Sorry, that was my ex." WTF? 2nd time his phone rang I excused myself from the table, called my roommate, and asked her to pick me up.

A little of this and a little of that.
    Rude.

The mobile phone has deteriorated manners to a despicable level.

Just make really loud sexual noises, that will either cause them to: 1. Leave, 2. Hang up.

    Problem solved.

Or grow a pair and tell them to hang up.

and why do you need ALL the reasons that this would or wouldn't be rude? are you suing the guy?

If it's my friends and me at let's say....Buffalo Wild Wings...and we're all having beers and looking at the good looking girls there...I could care less.."Do your thing, buddy" If I'm with my girl at a restaurant not having beers and someone calls her, I will take her phone, turn it off and place it in my pocket.

Unless it is work related, a family emergency or just a quick yes or no answer, I think it is rude anytime you are talking with someone in person and you stop to talk with someone on a cell phone.

I think it's very rude. I'll usually answer only if it's family just to make sure nothing serious has happened, otherwise, it's just a quick, "I'll call you back".

If you with a bigger group and someone is on the phone the whole time, just get the group to slowly get up and leave so he's stuck with the check :D

Yes it is rude. If it is a friend I say something while they are on the phone. If they are someone elses friend, I make fun of them a talk louder.
