Not that it would happen to a fumoto valve but a brass fitting cracked under my sink and leaked water all over the place. I'm scurred...

The oil pan on my 2008 4.0L is smooth, there's no bung proud of the surface like that. The stuck washer looks just like the picture that @trdmikey8 posted. I just give it a little pry and it pops off.

My guess is that there were 2 washers ...one stuck on the oil pan, and the other came off with the drain plug.

This might be a dumb question, but is there supposed to be a black plastic coating on the outside of the washer or do you peel that off?

is the plug brand new? they are usually silver( well also seen almost a blue middle too), except the first one that is installed at the factory that usually is painted onto the pan with the plug. usually the hardest one to get off because you have to separate it from the drain plug the first time

or do you mean that black coating on both sides of the washer and the silver middle like an Oreo? leave that alone

yes. cheap insurance. I also feel like it prolongs the life of the threads on the bolt and pan.

Yeah, I got a washer from the dealer with a new filter and it's got the black coating on each side. I figured it was supposed to stay on but tough to tell

I buy my OEM filters from Hedricks Toyota and they tape a new crush washer to the box. If they didn't, id buy some no matter. Piece of mind, proper torque. Definitely new crushes on the gear oil plugs. My $.02.

    Evening and happy Friday!

I’m not gonna read the previous posts, just here to say mine doesn’t have a washer, just threading it raw…

my truck is a flood car with a rebuild title and replacement frame. 190k on the powertrain. Maintenance history unknown, got the truck for free.

    I guess I’m saying, live dangerously…:burnrubber:

Some washers have that Teflon coating, some don't. It stays on, don't try to peel it off

Don't overthink it, make sure it's snug but don't wrench it down too hard. If you go easy on it you'll get a few uses out of it before it's pancake thin

Personally I like a nice soft aluminum washer with no coating. But it really doesn't matter all that much
