I like this idea that manufacturers are now forced to make turbo engines, which benefit from premium gasoline, but then have to include software for idiots putting shit tier gas in them which completely negates the benefits of having a turbo.

Said the guy with a naturally aspirated engine. I traded in my third gen. This engine is way above the old V6. It has nearly the same torque as the old Tundra V8.

Me? I read my manual and find that the suggested 87 runs great. I'll not be lining Big Oil's pockets for a higher octane. It ain't needed.

I use 87 like the manual says to. It runs fine, doesn't ping that I've noticed.

All engines can benefit from better fuel if they're designed to use it. Turbocharged engines can be more flexible in that regard for a lot of technical reasons, but that depends. There's nothing "shit tier" about 87 in and of itself. Maybe if you're buying super cheap swill from scabby stations rather than top tier stuff from reputable sources like you should be.

Frankly, I appreciate that Toyota designed the engine for and rated it on 87 rather than the crap some manufacturers pull with saying it'll run fine at "reduced power and economy" on 87 but do all the ratings using 93. This way, we're getting exactly what they advertised instead of caveated horsepower only accessible if you're willing to spend $1.50/gal more. Besides, the T24 might run better, make even more power, and/or burn it more efficiently on the jungle juice, so really, the only way to go is up.

I use Citgo Top Tier when out of town and use ethanol free gasoline at home. can usually increase my gas mileage about 40 miles per tank or about 3-4 mpg, using ethanol free.

So far just getting to 4000 miles I haven't found any need or benefit beyond entertainment to use the higher octane. At least with 855 - 1400 feet of elevation. For full load, heavy, towing etc.... I can keep up with freeway speeds. Slight improvement with fuel milage didn't have a benefit to beat the cost.

I would not say no or not ever. I have a trip coming up that will be high altitude for example. With past vehicles I heard ping that went away with higher octane. In my case the Tacoma is a work or task oriented vehicle and for entertainment I'd rather spend money on other things. I'm pretty sure I'll not be buying more high octane often but it was interesting to experiment and calculate.

I know the placebo effect is nice, but FYI, mid grade only exists to separate people from their money.

If it can run mid grade, then regular is fine. If it needs premium, then mid grade isn't good enough. There's really no point to the in between.

But turbos kick ass–unlike naturally aspirated engines–at higher elevations. I live at 4,000' and commonly cross a 7,000' pass. I used to notice it with my old 3rd gen.

Higher octane and advanced timing is better for emissions (as long as it stays cool enough to not increase NOx) and economy so manufacturers are pushing the tunes so far these days to meet regulations that you will often see benefits from the headroom mid-grade provides. They basically run at the edge and pull back when required and in some climates, it's an advantage.

But while I can confirm objectively better economy, that .8 is not worth paying nearly 10% more for gas.

I do because in the province of New Brunswick, there’s 10% corn piss in regular, 5% in mid grade, and none in high test.

They don’t even make mid-grade, they just blend regular and premium half and half at the dispenser.

OTT dyno, you basically get rated crank HP/TQ to the wheels with premium.

Funny how that works. You’re not getting the advertise horsepower if you run regular because the computer is gimping the engine.

I hate how essentially we only get 91 here.

You’re getting rated HP/TQ with regular. 278/317 is rated crank numbers or 254/285 to the WHEELS with regular. You’re getting considerably more with premium 273/323 to the WHEELS!

Nothing better than a premium gas debate, almost as good as an OCI debate.

I personally run 87. I will probably go to 93 during the hot summer months. Reason being is I notice when it is 90+ out you can definitely feel less power. Probably detecting more knock so it retards the timing a little more. Now, I'm sure someone is going to come in here with some scientific data and call me an effing idiot. Look, I already know I'm and effing idiot; no need to remind me...
