Once we had a very bad event going on in our city. The "chef" called me and said "everyone be there" We all left and we went to the place of the crime and start doing our business. 1/2 hour later one of my lab workers arrived, and the chief was right there. Where had you been he asked? Chief this is the rhythm and speed I feel safe, he replied, do you want me to speed it up? No no no, keep on doing you-re job the way you feel safe. he said. He knew from my continue complaints about this guy's work ethics. Thanks God he was late all the time and finally I was able to fire his ass. This is what the unions are good for.

How can it be better because they went on strike 50 times and clearly getting worse and worse at the same time ?

    Yeah I'm studying geology atm.

I don't know the teachers demands about pay but I did see how crowded my highschool got in under 5 years. I'm glad I got finished when I did because the amount of shit that got stolen out of lockers was unreal at my school with shared lockers.

Do you know if the agreement they made was made public?

If you looked at all the other provinces and territories in the document you posted with higher wages than the BCTF , all of them have had far less strike action and labour unrest , so I would counter that the BCTF is not winning by being in a constant labour war with the provincial government , they are actually losing . The other provinces / territories' teachers' unions are reaping better wages / benefits through constructive negotiation

Do you mean have they posted details of the current deal ?

    Yeah the current deal details.

I haven't seen their actual demands so I don't know if they are crazy or not tbh. What else can they do though? The government clearly doesn't want to negotiate or they wouldn't have gone on strike 52 times.

This has been happening through 3 different provincial political parties in charge of the province with very different outlooks on fiscal management and labour relations so I don't think your rationale for their strike action is valid

Here is an article I found on the demands vs tenative deal

    Who , the BCTF ?

They don't have to do anything for 6 years , but in that time they should probably hire some new negotiators from other provincial teachers' unions , lol

If you don't mind me butting in here, IMHO, you've hit the nail on the head right there. It's the arrogance of union negotiators to think they can get whatever they demand by bluster and threats, without bothering to do their homework on what's realistic.

They broke the law. As part of their job they were not allowed to leave the job to strike it was an agreement they made when they went to work. That is why they were forced back to work or fired it had nothing to do with union busting they are still unionized and get the pay they deserve.

A union is only as good as the people participating in it, if you have most of the members taking an active part it will likely be good. The trouble comes when people become complacent and look at the union as an outside entity.

That's a good point. I worked with chodes who always bitched about the union, yet never attended meetings or talked to reps. The attitude was always, what have they done for me lately? I always asked how much have you paid out of pocket for medical lately? and that usually shut them up.
Health insurance is the elephant in the room with unions. Our union like many others sacrificed raises to keep healthcare over the years because of the enormous costs. I was ok with that, especially when my teenage son got up from the dinner table one night and fell flat on the floor with an appendicitus attack. $11,000 later, my share was about $100 bucks. Beats the shite out of Obamacare. If I had crappy health care raising a family over the years, I'd be paying Dr. bills until I croak.
The people who expect big raises and Cadillac medical every contract are being unreasonable. You have to count money your not spending as part of your income. Healthcare bennies are huge, and generally the biggest factor in negotiations.

Healthcare costs are essentially a non issue here with the exception of dental when it comes to union negotiations

They consider your healthcare Commie in these parts.:oldglory:
Dental is another story, I have good health coverage, but I've eaten it on dental over the years. I paid enough out in braces, implants, crowns, root canals, etc. to buy a loaded Lexus.

As a former member of a negotiations team I can agree that there can be truth to this. When a union negotiates with management they often start with a set of proposals, and every time they back down from any of them they say they "gave up" something. Well, no, actually all they did to begin with was write a proposal down on a piece of paper. You can't give up something you never had.

The bottom line is, when you know a little about unions and management you see that every situation is unique. Unions can and do help workers, and they also sometimes make mistakes.
