GM and chrysler just suck. Ford didn't fail and need a bail out. They had better management while still using the union.

No. They made crap cars because they were number 1 for so many years, they got complacent thinking the public would buy any shit car they produced. The same thing started to happen to Toyota, and they aren't union. Their CEO Mr. Toyoda admitted that their quality had slipped when they were fined a Billion for the alleged runaway acceleration issue, and vowed to get quality back. The jury is still out on that.

I agree they send their work to cheaper countries, but had they been a great car company with great quality they would have weathered the recession much better.

Like others have said, they were firing CEOs along with sending them off with a golden package none of us will see in a lifetime.

I'm not saying their workers don't get paid well, I'm just saying their product was worse than cheap toilet paper. And nobody enjoys unexpected breach due to thin toilet paper

The U.S. car companies were in fact spending too much on wages, but when unions have agreed to concessions what usually happens is it buys them a few years of jobs but the inevitable still happens - the plant goes overseas - because the basic economics are still the same. Even at minimum wage workers here can't compete with a low-wage country.

All of you (probably younger than me) people who don't think a union can ever do you any good, I wish you well and hope you continue doing as well as you are. But you're going to retire one day into a country where things look different than they do now. Most companies today want more for less, and sooner or later that affects most people.

I think it was more of an issue of a company becoming complacent and comfortable and never thinking anything that bad would ever happen to them.

Most consumers want more for less , that's what's driving manufacturing out of North America

Right, and the UAW did go overboard, especially with work rules and demanding that people be paid too much for low- or moderate-skill jobs. Unions have done wrong, but they have done a lot of good too.

A common misconception I think a lot of people are thinking is that companies that are union are forced to be. There are companies that the employees vote a union in, but not all. For example, ALL the union electrical contractors in my jurisdiction are volunteer union contractors. Another words, they weren't forced to be a union contractor. They started as a union contractor.

There are other contractors elsewhere that are voted in, but it's voted in by the workers.

True. As another example, at the VW plant in Chattanooga the majority of the workers have now joined the union even though the initial vote wasn't successful for the union. The biggest opposition to the union did not come from VW but from politicians who were afraid that any foothold of the union would signal the end of their ability to go to foreign companies and promise low-wage, docile workers who can be treated shabbily.

Yep, here's some more info on that.

Volkswagen encouraged a union and threatened to pull back expansion plans witout the creation of a union.

They also said the rejection of a union could hinder the expansion of the company in the south.

Bernd Osterloh , head of global works council, said if they build another plant in the US it won't be in the south because of their apparent anti union stance.

I disagree that is what is driving people to demand lower and lower priced goods

I don't think so. When have consumers not wanted more for less? Isn't that always true in a market economy?

Some loss of manufacturing is inevitable when people here make more. We have already given up almost all electronics, clothing, shoes, and other lower-cost products. What VW realizes in Chattanooga is that unions, when they work properly, can enhance the value of what workers do. They want the union so they can set up work councils that allow people to improve their own jobs. And the UAW is for it.

So you see, there really is a better way than just trashing all unions. VW thinks so, and they're able to compete in world markets even though Germany has higher wages than the U.S.

So I ask, what is your way? No unions, I get that, but just keep lowering wages more and more? Then we won't have to work in Mexico or Indonesia because the low-pay work will all be here.

The unions care about one thing, MONEY. Don't be mislead thinking the care about you or your union brothers, its a scam. They take your dues and pay off the corrupt Democratic party for protection.
