That is not the case on 2nd gens unfortunately, they will stay on until the battery dies unless the driver's door is opened.

I just confirmed that mine do NOT go off.

    Not in 30 seconds
    Not after 30 seconds.
Not by pressing the lock button 2x in succession.
Not even pushing the Unlock button 2x

They will not go off until the Drivers door is opened.

My truck has no headlight time out feature. Or if it does, it has never worked.
I believe @Williston has confiremed this with his truck also.

The scenario in which this happens is unique.
Try this, as my first post was made years ago. Let me simplify it a bit.

    1. Start with head lights OFF.
    2. Get in truck, CLOSE the door. Put key in ignition and turn to the ON position.
    3. Turn the head lights ON. Leave them ON.
    4. Turn key off and remove key from ignition. (The headlights should still be on)
    5. Open drivers door. The headlights should go off.
    6. Get out of the truck. Close the drivers door.
    7. Open passengers door. Insert key in ignition. Turn key to ON position.
    8. Turn key Off, and remove key.
    9. Close passengers door.

Walk to the front of the truck. See if the headlights are still on.

Mine on my 14 do not turn off until the driver's door is opened, they will not time out.
    Maybe non-US spec ones do?

    Performed steps 1-9. Results below:
10: Walked to the front of the truck: Headlights still on
10A: Walked around and opened driver's door to retrieve keys sitting on the drivers seat: Headlights go off

Side Note: Another feature. I had the truck for well over a year before I discovered this one: One day I unlocked my truck with the remote on the way out the door and got distracted by the dog who was trying to sneak out with me. I chased him back into the house and headed out again. Pulled the handle on the door: locked. hmmmm.
Unlocked it again and went back for my phone. Same thing. Door locked. I know I unlocked it this time.

Turns out the truck had/has a "feature" that will re-lock the doors automatically after approx 30 seconds if you don't open one of them. It's a nice feature IMO. Like the dome lamp going out on it's own after a while if you forget to turn it back off with the switch. I think it might do this with the map lights too.

Want to learn some thing else?

Open the door and leave it open.
Put the key in the ignition. Leave it in the ignition. Do turn turn the key. Just leave it in the OFF position.
With door still open and the key still in the ignition, Try to lock the door.

That's a nice feature. Locking the doors with the door switch instead of the key or the remote is a hard habit to break. Having the power windows active for a while after shutting down is a nice feature too. Dunno if anything else stays alive.

It has a body control module, so you'd think it would control more than the locks, windows and the dome and headlights, but who knows.

My 07 tacoma and 06 highlander both do this. I never lock my vehicles on site and leave keys in the ignition in case it's in the way. I am learning the hard way because I have done it on 3 occasions. I need to turn lights off. I often need to get a tool from the truck and it is never from the drivers door.

I fly-fish in really remote spots in Maine and locked my keys in the truck (center cup holder) with the "button-lock" mistake: It's a hard habit to break but this was an instant and permanent cure: Started walking out and fortunately met a Game Warden driving in about 2 hours into my walk back to civilization. It cost me huge to get a locksmith house-call for this mistake, (and well worth it BTW) but I never did it again. I was lucky: the warden saw my one-way tracks in and came looking for me because it was getting late.

Here is what my 2007 double cab does:
driving headlights on>park>turn off car, headlights on>open driver's door> headlights turn off.
but when I am in a hurry I sometimes open the door just before the ignition is completely turned of and when the door is open before the keys are completely pulled, then door closed, the lights stay on until the battery dies.
I don't need the feature, I wish there was an easy way to turn off this feature.

2008 US Tacoma in Canada needed Daytime Driving Lights. Canadian Tire had the contract to install mod. I noticed every now and then my headlights would come on by themselves when the truck was not running and I wasn't near it. I removed the fuse for the mod and have used my low beams for DRLs ever since. No issues. I leave them on all the time. They go off when truck is off and I open the door.
