I want to get into audio books but don't know much about it. Thinking I can download mp3's and burn them to a CD and wondering if I can pop that into the factory radio and have it play? Or do I need to buy an app, install it on a smart phone, and pair the phone to the head unit via bluetooth? Ugh...ideas please!

The manual should tell you what files the headunit will read.

MP3 saved into a flashdrive works.

In the seven years I've had my Tacoma I have never put a CD into the disc drive. I've been using a USB drive for all of my old CDs and anything downloaded.

Two advantages, no skipping or ever having to change a disc.

You have many options. Many are low or no cost.
    MP3 "data" CD will play.
Flash drive in USB socket will play - no need to burn anything, but I am not sure of the filesystem limits and capacity limits. (May need to format the USB stick to FAT32, and may hit a capacity limit. i.e. - nothing more than 4GB per file, 32 GB partition size - Windows may not support FAT32 > 32 GB)
iPods work. I currently have my 5th gen video-ipod in my truck. I replaced its hard drive with SD Cards and all my music is on that. The HU controls the ipod (artists, albums, playlists, songs, etc..)

I listen to podcasts with my phone Bluetooth to the head unit. Here is my favorite free app for listening to podcasts on an Android phone. Skips forward and backwards when you want to skip commercials or rewind and hear something again. Also remembers where you stopped the mp3 so you can continue listening later.

Mine had a cd player but now has a dvd player. Gotta stay distracted as much as possible to compete with other drivers that text. :D
