Does a 1st gen Tacoma Limited also mean it’s a TRD?

    Hi,

I searched some threads and couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I’m hoping you guys can help. I’m new here and appreciate any advice.

I’m wondering if the 2002 Tacoma crew cab 4wd 3.4L V6 “Limited” is also a TRD? I ask because this truck is advertised as a Limited and a TRD, but it doesn’t have the TRD Off Road graphics. I’m concerned because I know of a 2004 crew cab 4wd 3.4L V6 Limited that does have the TRD Off Road graphics.

Are some Limited models not TRD? Or maybe the TRD graphics were removed? Or does Limited already imply that it’s a TRD?

This 2002 Limited does have the rr differential locker which makes me think it is in fact a TRD as well. I’m unsure of the shocks at this point but could find out soon. I included some pics below. Any help would be great, my head is spinning trying to figure this out. Thank you.

Just to note, both the vin lookup and carfax were no help. They both only state that it’s a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 crew pickup. They don’t say anything about trim level.

A buyer could have wanted a limited model taco and ordered it to have a rear locker as an add-on. It didn't happen often, but definitely happened.
The rear stickers could have been removed, the rear might have been in accident and body shop did not add those decals back after repair, or it is not a TRD model and is Limited with added locker.

Thanks for the quick reply. The carfax doesn’t show any accidents. The other scenarios you mentioned seem possible though.
Besides the rr locker, are there any other tell tale TRD signs I could look for with this model? Shocks? Anything else?

    Thank you!

    Where does the truck live??

Running the VIN should tell you just what model it is.

Just so you know Car Fax is only shops that submit information to them I don`t know any shops in my area that do .

It also has the TRD style wheels. Just food for thought look under the truck to see the locker motor on the rear end. All the other TRD stuff is worthless by now. Shocks will need replaced etc. Are the seats the larger bolster seats with power lumbar?

Im not sure about all limited Tacoma's but my limited is not a TRD it is just a Limited Prerunner, 2wd no locker. I know you could buy trd 4x4 limited at the time but though. Also if that is a factory sunroof that's a super rare truck.

The TRD was a package that could be added to either the SR5 or Limited trim levels.

SR5 came with Manual Windows standard (Electric optional) with Manual seats
Limited came with Electric Windows, Electric seat, and Leather trimmed steering wheel.

Limited and TRD came with the same Alloy Wheels.

    (edited: added clarification).

Also people can ads TRD graphics just as easily. My buddy made me some for my base model. But I have TRD Sport stickers not offroad, so by new 3rd gen standards it works since I dont have an elocker.

It was an option on the SR5 with the "Convenience Package—includes power outside mirrors, windows and door locks; door-trimmed fabric; cruise control; and sliding rear window with privacy glass". On the Limited it was a "standard" feature.

But more looking at it, I think you nailed it on the head with the Power Seat is only in the Limited.

That's a dam fine looking Tacoma. Looks a lot like mine. I have a 2003 Tacoma limited, same color scheme. Mine is a TRD, but I had to have one of the rear quarter panels repainted from very minor fender bender. I chose not too replace the TRD stickers, so that I wouldn't look like every other TRD on the road.

    Hi all,
Thanks for the input. Turns out you can figure this information out very quickly by requesting a Vehicle Spec Sheet from any Toyota dealer. All they need is the vin. The spec sheet only shows what was included at the time of the original purchase however. Anything added later will not be included.
The vehicle in question does have the TRD Off Road package included, as well as the Limited package (which was never a doubt). Again, all this was verified by a Toyota dealership via the Vehicle Spec Sheet. I believe the graphics were removed for personal aesthetic reasons. The dealership was also able to supply the original TRD graphics.
In conclusion, in this case doing a vin lookup and pulling carfax was no help as it didn’t state either TRD or Limited (the latter being very clear for many reasons), only the Vehicle Spec Sheet contained this information.
Thanks again, hopefully this thread will help others in doubt who can’t physically see the truck they’re curious about.

Was that sun roof factory? Does it come with the limited package standard? What a beautiful vehicle...

Thank you and yeah it is! Looking at the spec sheet it was a factory add-on not included with the limited package.
