I have a 1999 Tacoma. My check engine light came on and after doing the scan I learned it was the throttle position sensor. Replacing the part doesn’t seem too bad on my model but I was curious if I had to set it a certain way (like an old school rotary cap) like there’s a timing aspect that gets thrown off if I position it incorrectly?

My TPS is reading 12.9% which is higher than the spec of 7-11% and I believe I will have to replace the sensor.

    https://www.customtacos.com/threads/tps-throttle-position-sensor-how-to-set.7845/

“Your TPS does need to be adjusted, loosen both set screws on the sensor and apply vacuum to the thottle opener (dash pod). Insert a 0.026 thickness gauge between the throttle stop screw and stop lever. Connect an ohmmeter to the bottom two terminals of the sensor. Gradually turn the sensor clockwise until the ohmmeter deflects and tighten both set screws”

Another guy in that thread says he did the adjustment without applying vacuum, engine off.

Just know that sometimes people experience the throttle body getting stuck so that it rests just barely shy of being closed. This may not be a sensor issue…

I have replaced a TPS on a 99 and a 2000 and never adjusted either of them. The ECM controls it.

Easy way to check is look at the mount screw holes. Earlier years had slots and should be "set". Later years just had round mount holes, your 99 should not need adjustment.
Now that being said and while Toyota does not specify an "adjustment", there is a tiny bit of slop between the mount screw and the hole. We are talking maybe a degree at most.

    Early type with adjustment slots.

Thanks, mine has the round mounts and can’t be adjusted like the one in the diagram shown. Appreciate the help!

Lucky pre posirioning? The ECM isn't controlled by the tps (throttle position switch) its job is input to % of throttle opening or positioning to be analyzed by the ECM. Inputting switch.
