Does an additional 1" of ground clearance really make a difference?

Seems like you already know, for what you do you don’t need 285’s. When you change what you do and need 33’s or 35’s bring $$$, patience and willingness to compromise you MPG at a minimum.

    You are good as is.

Idk, I'm pretty sure I've done the worst trails in my area. Mostly over lava rocks. No one on here wants to hear this, but 'wheeling' is probably 90% driver, 10% vehicle mods if you're not trying to crawl some 1 ton boulders in MOAB.

I've seen someone bust one of their 35s on a trail here, then a bunch of stock trucks like me make it to the end and back.

Depends where it go, I've gone places where the extra 1 inch is the difference between touching and not touching. Or the difference between a light scrape vs a very heavy scrape

I wheel almost weekly here in Arizona. I have sliders, and skid plates and not much else(and waiting on parts to arrive for a winch, and better suspension). I lost about half an inch of clearance due to the skid plates and really notice it. I hit a lot more obstacles (with the skid plates) than I used to without them. An inch of extra clearance is a lot--the Taco only has about 9" to begin with so it is about an 11% increase.

Based on my experience, I definitely think an inch of clearance does make a difference in wheeling. If you never hit anything before though, you obviously don't need any more clearance,

On these trucks, not really. Just pick a different line. This same subject is debated with 14 bolts. Shave the bolt 14 or not to and in the grand scheme of things its not worth all the extra fab work for another 1", just take a different line.

Depends on where you are trying to go I guess. I agree, pick a different line if you can. I have gone pretty much anywhere I wanted with factory ground clearance. Approach angles come into play more often than ground clearance if you are in the hilly areas. IMO
