Does any other truck compare to Tacoma's reliability?

This is a 100% serious question:

Does any other truck out there (save for maybe the V8 Tundra) compare to Tacoma's reliability?

Curious to hear the forum's thoughts.

    Thanks.

If I was concerned about bias, I wouldn't have posted here. That's how that works.

I had a 1988 Chevy S-10 2.5l 5 speed manual base model. It had rubber floor mats, crank windows and no AC and a radio delete plate. I bought it new when I was in the Navy for $5250. I put 220K+ on it. I replaced the water pump once and I put about 4 Crew Chief mufflers on it over the years. Tires/brakes/wipers and that was it. I traded it for a tuna fishing trip and the guy drove it for another 80K and he parked it next to his shed and went in for a simple hernia surgery and didnt come home. Truck sat there for years. Probably still there.

Yerp. Will say the older C/K 1500's fit the build as well, and parts a a plenty conversely to tacomas. Generally speaking I'm a base model guy. Can't break Power seats if you don't have them, can't break GPS if you don't have it. Give me some crank windows and a head unit that still says AC Delco with knobs, and if I need to chuck the diff lcokers on the driver door (or passenger if you're lucky enough) to go flip those on quick.

Reliability can be debated with any vehicle. It depends on the car, the owner and if the guy building it was doing his job.
I worked for a Ford dealership and saw Escapes coming in with 20000 miles and blown engines 3 years ago. Look at the new Bronco right now still blowing engines. The problem was never corrected. I also saw several Escapes with over 200000 miles including one with 360000 miles and was still running great. Why the difference I don't know.
I use Consumer Reports to judge reliability but that is only a generic number they quote but it still is a guide for reliability on vehicles.
I bought my Tacoma thinking I made the best choice when I was comparing it to the Nissan Frontier and Honda Ridgeline. Nissan was having transmission problems they were not owning up to, so I passed on the Frontier. The Ridgeline just wasn't truck enough for me, so I went with my 17 Tacoma after assuming the frame issues were corrected in 2016. I assumed wrong. For such a great vehicle I have had paint issues they won't fix, my frame was half assed during the recall when rust protection was applied. I'm already concerned about the rust on my floorboards of all places. Toyotas service killed it for me when my truck sat for 3 months after I hit a deer and they kept sending the wrong parts. I still love my truck, but I think the Ridgeline would have been a smarter investment. With it right now I would be worrying about the gas tank falling out from rust issues it has. It doesn't really matter what you buy. You could get a good vehicle or a piece of crap.
I have owned Toyotas since 1989 but recently parked a new Mazda CX5 in my driveway. I don't think Toyota is such a great car anymore namely because of the poor service we have gotten with the last 2 we bought from them. Great till it breaks.

100%. The ony way I know of to attempt to find "the most reliable" is to buy something 10ish years old, where all known problems are know and how to fix. Literally why I'm here. Bought a 10+ year old truck because the value retention, to cost of ownership, to reliability, just kinda won.

    Is the the Tacoma reliable?

Which Tacoma are you talking about? 1st gen 2nd gen 3rd gen, there seems to be some variations with in the various generations. 4cyl or 6cyl? Manual or Automatic.

I probably see at least one 1st gen on the road every day, but I do not see a lot of them. I'm in the rust belt, but how many other trucks of that same year do I see on the road? I don't consider that a reliability test.

Apples to Oranges, I would say a Nissan Hardbody is more Reliable than a Toyota Tacoma.

I like my Tacoma but due to the frame rust issues if I had to buy another truck I would buy a 2014-2016 f150 3.7 6 speed auto. The engine and trans is super easy to work on, only real engine issue was a leaking water pump but they redesigned it years ago, the transmission had one issue but they fixed that in a recall. Technology wise its in line with the 2012 tacoma I believe.
Sure its doesn't have power like a f150 shelby 5.0 supercharged but the tacoma 4.0 doesn't have race car power either.

90s Mazda B-Series were bombproof. I had a '92 2200 that I had zero issues with aside from basic maintenance that sat about 300,000km once I sold it. I have a '99 Ford Ranger 3.0 which is pretty decent with 224,000km I think. Lots of stuff needs to be replaced, but again it's maintenance issues. The previous owner treated it like crap, never maintained it, didn't disclose any issues but I'm slowly working my way through all of it. That being said it's a crusty Ranger as many are and I'm not sure if I should dig much deeper or let an enthusiast buy it and keep it going. Needs a head gasket, has an exhaust leak (I believe from the right side exhaust manifold - broken bolt near the back of the block), master cylinder and rear brake lines. A couple smaller items. I want to fix it up but it currently sits 600km away without any weather sheltering, given the weather I wouldn't have time to replace everything even if I took two weeks off.

There are plenty of 1ton C/Ks being used as brush trucks at volunteer and rural fire companies.

Probably some Dodges and Fords too, I'm sure those are well maintained and not driven daily.

I saw a nice early to mid 70's might have been older than that Ford 1ton SRW 4x4 driven by a young lady yesterday.

Growing up, my dad had a small 1980 toyota longbed work truck that was lucky to get washed or oil changed once a year but had over 300k miles when he finally sold it. Been a toyota truck fan since. Thanks Dad.

My 94 Toyota Hilux was fairly reliable. It's only weakness was the single roller timing chain. I ordered an LCE kit to convert it to a dual roller, and was just about to install it when the timing skipped a tooth. It turned out that a tooth had broken off, allowing the timing chain to jump. Talk about great timing.

Once the timing chain was updated to 20R/22R standards, it was bulletproof. Thank you LCE!

I've had Toyota trucks since the mid 1980's and they were always good and reliable, just very sparse in comparison to an "equal" model from GM or Ferd. I now own a 2015 Taco and I can say that I don't think it's all that great of a vehicle, it just has less issues then anything else. I have literally logged 100's of thousands of miles behind the wheel of Toyota trucks, I won't own another Tacoma. I keep my '99 4runner in good running condition and I prefer it to the Taco, even though it has 280K on the clock. I would jump into that rig and drive it anywhere on a moments notice, I wouldn't even think about that in the Taco because of how bad/uncomfortable the seating is and just the overall "less quality" feel of the vehicle compared to the 4runner. I know that this is starting to get off track from the subject, so I will go onto record by saying that my opinion of the most reliable vehicle that I have experienced was my 2005 Civic LX. It was the cockroach of the automobile world- nothing would stop it (until it hydroplaned at 15 MPH and had a head on crash that I walked away from) and equally- my '99 4runner although the Honda needed far less maintenance to keep running.

I had a 2013 Ram that was a piece of garbage. Bought it brand new and all the flashy electronics started to go haywire after about 5 years with only 60,000 miles on the truck. Took it to the Dealership multiple times and they always gave me the “we can’t replicate the issue so it doesn’t exist” BS. I’ll never own another Chrysler/RAM product.

That truck caused me to go with a Tacoma because I wanted something I could trust.
