Does anybody have experience with rusty frame info in Montana?

I found a dealer in AZ that has most of their Tacoma's originating from Montana. Does Montana have a rep as rust free? I read the state DOT page and I guess they add a corrosion inhibitor to the magnesium and sodium chloride and only salt down to 10*. So maybe it is so cold up there they don't use much salt. Also they look like they worry about polluting the trout streams. What about Portland/Beaverton Oregon ....do they use much salt in that section of the state?

It's less about what they use for ice melting and more about how well the truck was cared for. I live in Saskatchewan where they use all sorts of deicing salts/chemicals and winter lasts 5-6 months. My frame barely has any rust. But I make sure to wash it as often as possible and do bi-anual fluid film applications. I also keep it in a heated garage so it has a chance to melt and dry off every night. People who don't do these things will have much more rust.

So to answer your question, no those states are not going to be rust free. But that doesn't necessarily mean every vehicle from there is doomed. You'll have to check them out just like anything else.

I agree with what saskabush says, also you don’t really know if someone relocated to mt. from a rust state. Get the vin # and start there with the use of Toyotas owners website. It may tell ya something.

These vehicles had Carfax reports showing only Montana before AZ. I thought it peculiar that 1 dealer in AZ had at least 4 Tacoma's from Montana. Basically all of their used Tacoma's I saw started out in Montana! You would think if you were in AZ that would be the best place to source a Tacoma. I'm looking in AZ for 1 reason....it's a frigging desert with no snow!

I would imagine most everyone in Montana has experience with rusty frames.

It turns out this dealer has corporate offices in Montana so when he transfers the title "previously owned in Montana" shows up on Carfax! The specific vehicle I was looking at was in NM it's whole life. Hey, the only way to learn is to ask questions, preferably before you buy.

I’m from, and currently live in MT. We aren’t nearly as bad as the salt belt states, but we still definitely rust.

When I was looking for a Tacoma, I talked to a small dealer in NH or VT. He only had Tacomas and 4Runners and they were all priced like 6-7K below market value. Every single one had pretty bad rust. The ones that don’t sell in the states he ships them over to Africa and the wholesale buyer pays top dollar regardless of condition.
So yeah dealers do all kinds of strange things.
