I'm an avid motorcycle rider as well as an avid off roader/camper. I belong to IBA Riders which stand for "Iron Butt Association" and it's world wide. They have all kinds of challenging rides on their site and I've done 3 of them, 1500 miles in 24 hours-twice and 50cc where they give you 50 hours to cross from any point of one coast to the other coast. So I did it from San Diego, CA to Atlantic Beach, FL in 38 hours.
Moral of this story... Yes, solo camping!
I don't mind groups and I'll hang, just as long as that one knucklehead doesn't start interfering with my chi... then I'll just fade away.

    HAPPY CAMPING EVERYONE!

A few months ago I did an 11-day trip from out west and back by myself. Camping in the state parks around everyone else was ok, but I most enjoyed the dispersed camping where there was no one around for miles. Had a great time.

It depends, my T-800 does that "I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle" line, and I get in for free... most days.

I'm solo camping or hunting at least 50% of the time. Usually out for a week to two weeks at a time. About the only people I can stand to share a camp with are my brothers, my lifelong buddy of 45yrs, or my son. Everyone else just usually annoys the ever lovin' phuck outta me. Even when the brothers come, I always try and time it so I can get at least a few days of alone time out there. I just truly enjoy the solitude and getting as far from the nearest other person as possible. Something very peaceful and calming about it for me.

I get antsy after about 6 months without a good solo trip to decompress. Right now going on 18 months, and going crazy. Will be another 8 months before I'm allowed to go out solo and mess with being around chainsaws, axes and knives again. Once I'm off anti-platelet meds though, I'll be seriously makin' up for lost time.

    Some of my solo outtings:

Solo like in alone with yourself, or with just your family in a remote place? I do both, and really thought it meant alone and not in a campground with a bunch of other drunk strangers.

Going solo by yourself definitely has benefits, it helps me to take things that are truly important in my life less for granted. And going alone with a significant other or close friend does somewhat the same, as a shared experience. It’s something everyone should do at least now and then.

    Good thread!

Going camping by myself used to feel a lot like going to a movie by myself or going to a restaurant by myself... Part of the fun was that it was a social occasion. However... when you've taken the days off work and packed your cooler, pre-prepared some meals, organized your tackle and loaded the truck... well... when you get the call from your buddy and hear the lame apologies... sometimes you just say goodbye to the wife and kids and drive into the woods to torture fish and drink liquor. It's surprisingly relaxing.

edit: also, should I say something about sex robots now? Is that where this thread is at?

Do you think the big "reset" you're feeling is just resetting your natural sleep cycle?? Read a few articles years ago that got me really hooked on camping, and they were about the important of maintaining a natural sleep cycle, basically waking up with the sunrise. They recommended at least once a month either go camping for a few days or you can do it at home by simulating camping (no electronics, no alarms, open up your room to wakeup with the sun).

I too get an intense satisfaction from camping and used to think it was just the "fresh air" or the "solitude" but the more I pay attention to it I think its as simple as just resetting my biological clock. The fresh air and solitude is just a bonus :)

Can't imagine how great it feels to get out there weeks at a time! Wish I had time for that, sounds amazing.

Funny, I do think of my outings as a "reset", but I don't know if it has to do with sleep patterns, as I'm usually not getting enough sleep! Up at 3:30 or so and hiking out to and up glassing points by 4:30 so I can get up there before the first crack of light. Walking back after dark, getting to camp, getting something to eat and having a few beers, then off for 4 or 5 hours sleep.

The reset for me is being alone without having to think about anything other than what I'm doing at that moment or planning beyond the next days activities. Cutting wood. Glassing. Looking for critters or artifacts. Staring at the fire and having a beer. No cell service. Just total peace and quiet and isolation. That spooky feeling and heightened awareness of walking in or out a couple miles in the dark alone in lion country. It just clears my head and melts away any stress or worries.

One of my favorite and most exciting times for me is hitting the dirt about 10pm to midnight on a Friday night (jump off point is about 6-7 hours from where I live, and I don't waste a day waiting to leave early on a Saturday to get there in daylight), knowing I'm heading 50 or 60 miles and several hours in, likely won't see anyone on the way in, get to crack a beer about half way in, and just enjoy the drive and anticipation of the trip to come. Setting up camp by light of the fire and a coleman lantern. If there's no wood left over from the last trip, head out about 2am to make a wood run. Come back, grab a bite and a couple more beers, and hit the rack for a few hours. Maaannnnn....next spring can't get here soon enough.

I solo camp well over 50% of the time. It usually involves a remote fly-fishing trip. It's like my "life reset" button.

I've only been riding a few years. In my 1st two years I rode 25,000 miles but I've never ridden more than 325 miles in a day. 1500 in 24hrs boggles my mind. I know I could do it but I don't think I like riding that much. My hat's off to you!

Back to solo camping. I love solo camping whether it be backpacking, truck camping, taking the motorcycle somewhere etc. Solitude is a well earned treat I give myself every now and then.

Well thank you, but keep your hat on because one day you might surprise yourself. Your stamina builds up as you ride more, to each his own tough

Solitude is key to my well being and I think if more people got more in touch with themselves the better society would be.

    Peace and tranquility...

I like me; I'm the nicest person I know, and when I'm with me, I can have intelligent conversations, ask questions and receive sensible answers... I've never not been able to reach a compromise with myself when I don't agree with myself on what to do... Solo is THE way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a good quote. I totally agree. Solitude offers so many opportunities.

I did endurance sports...first running, later mountain bike racing for a long time. I spent my 20's and 30's working as a chef (still am but switched from fine dining to corporate dining - way less hours, holidays and weekends off) while racing mountain bikes.

Nowadays I like to sit still and stare at trees. Every now and then I'll get motivated to climb a mountain or go on a long ride but I really like sitting still.

Maybe I just need a good route to ride to hit 1000+ miles in a day. I also live in CA so we have lots of cool places to ride.

I got t-boned by a car on the highway on my moto last year. That kinda slowed me down a bunch too. I seemed to have lost my tolerance for discomfort. I just gotta work on getting it back. That's gotta wait though. I'm having surgery to correct a diaphragmatic hernia (my liver is poking my lung through a hole in my diaphragm) from that accident in 2 weeks.

Maybe I should start planning that long long ride to celebrate still being able to ride. Hmmm...I think this is a good idea. Thanks for mentioning Iron Butt.

Your welcome. Sorry to hear about the mishap but sounds like you're heading the right direction both physically and mentally.
I have a friend who was a head chef and he's also in a much better place since he went to private sector.

Hope for a successful surgery and speedy recovery so you can enjoy more riding, camping and enjoying the calm.

    Cheers
