    Just rope.

I started this trip out (about 10 days) just laying on the cot under the stars. Forecast looked like no weather, so I didn't bother setting up the tent. About 5 days in it started raining. Just threw up a tarp over the cot.

Kept the rain off and slept comfy.

Don't sleep on the ground anymore if I can help it, but have no problem just popping open the cot and sleeping out. Usually reserve the tent now for times it is going to get nasty / cold.

I wish I could get more enjoyment from camping/backpacking alone. I'd go out all the time. Most of my friends have different schedules and kids now so it's hard to line up time off. I have an old high school friend that is always posting pics of his 7+ day solo backpacking trips. I done a few 2-3 solo outings and just found that I got bored being alone after so long.

When trips don't go as planned or even completely go to shit, as long as you're with good friends, it's a good time. I think some of my most memorable trips were when things went off the rails. For me, camping has just always been a social thing to enjoy with a group of friends.

    simple things for now
While I do enjoy the trips with the wife, I love it when I'm alone. She does get upset when I go for 4-5 days at a time in the back country. I always leave my route and when to expect me back within some kind of service

Hello Camping Guys, from Ky. Just got new truck 4 days ago. I ordered a matching ARE Cap which should be in next week. But plan is to head west from Ky apprx Sept 1st, spend a week to 10 days around Leadville, Co. Then about same length of time stay around Moab area. That puts me into Az around 1st week of Oct. Hope it has cooled a little by then. Maybe a week or so in N Az then back to Ky. Basketball season and all.. So you never know, we may meet up somewhere. Mine 5-6 wks about 75% camping.

That’s going to be an amazing trip!

I moved from CT to CA, 22 states in 2 months. Super fun even with a Honda Civic and my mountain bike.

A truck would be way better.

Can't remember the last time I'd been bit. Always out in N. AZ, and usually the weather is in the 50's and below at night when I go. Biting insects are rarely a problem. The flies are a much greater bother, but I just avoid the sticks until monsoon season has arrived (if possible). Some rain really makes the flies much less of a bother. I remember a few trips where I "had to" go during June time frame though (as when I had the boy was young and I had him for the summers, we made the most of it and were out often), and the flies were just a brutal annoyance. Thank god we can now skip our June / early July camps.

I knew it was rope

Its all mental. Tents, tarps and all aren't really needed. There's nothing better than a night under the stars.

Oh there were definitely moments. But on the whole, the solo trips were more memorable and more "getting away," which is why I like to camp.

I am not really into solo camping. For me it is all about spending quality time with my wife. It might be because I hardly have any other friends but I really don't want to force myself to be more alone than I already am.

I do everything with my wife pretty much and I wouldn't want it any other way. We have so much fun off roading in northern Michigan and sleeping in the back of the 4runner works out great.

I don't really enjoy camping completely alone for more than an evening and one night. I'm not into being alone and I'm not into big groups. One on one or just a couple people is what I enjoy.

I used to have a dog... We did everything, went everywhere, shared our food, just absolutely existed with and for eachother.... We had some awesome man and dog camping times, but now that he's gone, I can't bring myself to go out there alone for an overnight in an empty sleeping bag.

Most my camping trips are solo, though my wife has been more willing to come along since we got the truck with softopper and sleeping platform. Backpacking trips are always solo for me. That's the way I prefer it. Pick my own hiking pace, where to set up camp, when to wake up etc.
