I just looked up some of the guards available.

There are a lot that are very similar.

A guarantee some of these vendors copied each other and tossed in a different CNC cut logo to make it their own.

I actually thought about making my own tracing and making my own dfx and gaurd, but remembered I don't care that much if my cat is stolen. I have insurance.

Insurance is the all savior people think it is. Sure they’ll cover the loss (minus deductible which is probably more than these shields). Then they’ll also probably raise your rates too. So if you are okay with that, then fully rely on your insurance. If I lived in a spot with high cat thefts I’d probably install a set.

Just steal a set off of someone's truck. You'll still be a piece of shit thief but won't have to mess with actually making or buying anything.

Your conscience should be the same either way, win win.

    OP,

It's ok to be cheap, but not to be lazy. Take your own measurement, it's not that hard.

Imma submit this to the encyclopedia brittanica people to post as an example under the definition of "irony."

Cardboard aided design, a ruler, carpenters angle and some tape would be sufficient, rather than investing aignificantly more time copying someone elses time.

Nice work and design! If you make more, put a custom logo on it. Is the film something you put on or was it sent out and used that way - protective covering for the finish but also a great idea to make it not so reflective for the laser also.

The film is to protect the mill finish(2B brushed) and for laser cutting.

But mine actually made with ironworker, shear and notcher, I don't have CNC at my shop.

Is ironworker a brake? I’m not familiar with it.

What do you do to prep aluminum to bend it? I’ve often wanted to bend it at a 90° for mounts and things like that but I’m too afraid of it cracking- or will it?

And this is one of the many reasons prices are increasing, and why I charge a 35% restocking fee, minus any shipping charges.

Charge backs only work if you can prove the company operated outside of its own policy.

It’s not stealing if you’re just getting measurements. It’s just the lazy way of making your own. If he were to completely copy the design, then that would be stealing. The company that sells cat shields have over priced their product by a lot. “It’s worth buying to prevent theft.” No it’s not. If anything, the company is ripping off the consumer so that would make them the crooks. Now stop being cunts to each other people.

As someone who sells a self made/designed product on Amazon/Ebay/website, I can assure you that buying something with the full intention of sending it back is stealing.

Takes a real cunt not to see that.

if someone copies another’s work it is a copyright infringement, and legally it is the intellectual property of the original designer. When someone makes something, US copyright law covers it even without the copyright symbol. The US court will not cover it however, unless it is registered with the patent office, but you could settle it in civil court.

There is such a thing as derivative works, which are similar, but not copies of the original. Yes, someone could legally take measurements and use parts of it for their own design, however, the design itself needs to be a new original one in order for it not to be a copyright infringement.

So yes, as you put it, it’s not technically stealing, it’s copyright infringement.

Also, being a new poster here, one should understand that calling other members names like that is going to lead to some issues with the mods sooner or later… plus usually the point at which a thread gets :locked:ed.

Man, a lot of differing opinions.

If someone hooks you up with a cut file, I would hope you wouldn't turn around and make profit off of it.

Why can't you use cardboard as a mock up, then bring those measurements to CAD and make your own?

2D CAD isn't difficult at all. The real labor here would be getting measurements but all it takes is a box cutter, sharpie, and cardboard pieces.

After that, you own your own file and you can sell it if you'd like...or even cut multiple out (custom even) and sell as you see fit.

Hahaha! It’s definitely not stealing. It’s just measurements. Copying it would be stealing. Just because you make and sell something on those sites doesn’t make you all that knowledgeable, when it comes to theft. Time for a grown up lesson. Say I wanted to make a picture frame. One that is the same size as the one I already own because it’s a perfect fit. I would simply measure that picture frame and then make another. That’s not stealing. Now if I made that exact picture frame then that would be close to stealing an idea, but it wouldn’t be for sale. So if you’re just getting measurements of something then it’s not stealing. Just because the dude is sending it back doesn’t make him a thief.

And for those saying these companies that sell them are a "rip off", you're way in over your head.

Even if it's a larger corporation, it still took quite a bit of investment to get where it's at.

Yes, I'd rather buy from the local guy/gal, or small business (if online) given the chance because I'm all for small businesses. At the same time, it won't be much cheaper because that business owner has quite an investment that needs to pay for itself sooner or later.

    For reallll hahaha!
Well people aren’t very nice to one another. I’m not sure why?! The first response to the OP was a dude calling him a lazy pos or something like that. That was totally uncalled for. Why do people gotta be such big cunts to one another?Ahh it’s because they’re hiding behind whatever device it is they’re using which makes them feel safe.

If you buy a product with sole intent of copying it's design and then returning it, it's clearly stealing intellectual property and in general a shitty thing to do. Not to mention pure laziness, if you think the commercial ones are too expensive then get off your lazy ass and design/make your own. Or maybe you just aren't capable of that and just like to bitch at others.
