Here's what I experienced with my 87 el camino, 200r4? transmission. I got my hands on a good transmission cooler with thermostat controlled fan. I brought it to my mechanic I use to do things I don't want to do myself. I brought it to them to do a few things, oil change, install the cooler, figured I'd have them do the transmission fluid and filter too. They're good people, and I don't mind throwing some work to them to help keep their doors open. Shortened story, replacing the fluid was a mistake, the transmission ended up needing a full rebuild afterwards. I had already had in mind I wanted a tacoma to replace it. I looked and looked for one with a v6, manual trans, but they're hard to find. I also test drove the only model available new at the dealer, I think it was a trd sport 4wd. Shortened further, I ended up with a rebuilt trans I put less than 10 miles on before smashing into a new benz, and a 07 xrunner v6, manual. So I'm in agreement with the above theory.

171,000 miles here. At the time I got my truck it had 665,000. I went to do an oil change. I was in a hurry and drained the wrong one (trans) I know I'm not the only one but I'm sure most wont admit it. But my stupidity went one step further and I added a full oil change worth of oil to the the engine and left the trans dry. Again I was in a hurry and diddnt pay attention. I had to pick my kids up from school. So I drove 2 miles on double the engine oil and just the trans oil that was left in the converter. By the time I got home the engine would want to stall every time I slowed down from the oil being pushed to one side of the motor and would have to rev to 3000 to engage 1st gear. I figured it pretty early into the trip but a couldnt leave my kids at school so I finished my trip. Dropped the pan, and completed the trans flush I wasn't trying to do in the first place. I used my scan tool instead of letting the ecu tell me the trans was up to temp. I like this method better. I drained the engine and did an actual oil change with the correct amount of oil this time. She runs perfect. So I went out and bought a lotto ticket. Lost the lotto but I still see this as a win. Believe it or not I am an automotive technician. I graduated from UTI out of the automotive and diesel program using my GI Bill. (Thanks taxpayers. $45,000 well spent) and moved on to work in the auto industry for years. Now I'm a forklift tech at one of the largest forklift company on the planet. is not a flex. I'm just saying that my stupidity is always stronger than skill. In my case WAY stronger. But back to my point 165,000 miles on factory oil. Flushed it and it runs like a top. Lol.
