Does anyone know if you need insurance and tags on a vehicle you don't drive?

Only have to insure and tag if active on the roadway. Unless you have an outstanding loan for it and your bank tells you to carry insurance. It's not like a sheriff is going to stop in your driveway and write you tickets for no tags or insurance. Keep it on private property and it isn't a road issue.

Edit: it's possible other states are different I suppose. Like, Virginia has crazy inspections? Who knew?

In Calif you'll need a Non Op tag and this is the same a actual vehicle registration but at a cheaper yearly fee . Only allowed to store the vehicle at a repair facility or at your home an cant be driven or parked on a street . Also when Non Op'd you don't need insurance

The more I read, the more I would suggest checking your specific state, county, and city codes.

Yuup I’ve lived in Indiana and now in Tennessee and same law. It’s some kind of clutter law. It’s mostly for city areas but they don’t want junk vehicles setting around making areas look trashy.

I’m in Ohio. If you have a vehicle registered (plated) they make you sign a proof of insurance waiver at the time of registration. They will do random mailers to say show me proof of insurance as of this date. You can have a vehicle titled in your name without insurance but if registered it does require insurance.

Having a said that, the suburbs of Cleveland are filled with people who don’t want to pay for insurance and drive daily without anything and just run the risk of getting caught.

In mass you're supposed to retitle it so they can charge you sales tax. A lot of people with bikes don't though

In Virginia, fog lights are not required, but if you have them and they don't work your vehicle will fail inspection.

In Pennsylvania, where I live, your vehicle will automatically fail inspection if the check engine light is on!

Regulations are generally state by state. Also your local planned community can (and do) have covenants: e.g., no parking of work trucks in front of the house, no (or limited number of) unregistered vehicles on the property, you must keep the garage door down, etc.

In Kentucky, I pay only ad valorum tax on one that never sees a public road, no insurance, no licensing fee.

If you never drive it, no you don’t.

If you are going to drive it from where you buy it to home or wherever you store it, contact your insurance company, they may provide coverage for a brand new vehicle for X amount of days after purchase.
Then you’ll have coverage for that transport.

The vehicle still needs to be registered in your name though. So you still need to do your and maintain your tags. If its stolen would be nice the DMV actually can verify the vehicle as being yours and its easy to flag the plate or VIN as stolen.

State law varies so contact your local DMV. The state may require registration if it charges personal property tax on the vehicle. Or they may have reduced rates for non operational vehicles. But again I would register it just because I want that VIN registered in my name incase of theft. Then when its fixed getting insurance takes 10 minutes.

If you never drive it and don’t have a loan you don’t need insurance. But that never truly means never.

In Florida, you dont need to have a registration, insurance, inspection.... hell, you really don't even need a drivers license. Come on down. Plenty of room

Its a personal property tax. Its a taxable asset.
To say thats BS is to say property tax is BS if you own empty land you don’t use. It doesn’t matter if you don’t use the land you still have to pay taxes on it.
Its still an asset thats value goes into your personal property tax evaluation. Ownership is all that matters, not use.

Some states just charge a fee for road use.

Not necessarily defending it but just stating the logic behind it.

Sounds like an HOA issue, you couldn't have that vehicle in your driveway here but you could keep it in garage.

Kingsport started enforcing this law several years back, but people just bought cheap car covers and put them on. It wasn’t strongly enforced unless you were in city limits with 7 vehicles in your yard!

Every state is different. I’ve stored a vehicle 2 years in my in-laws garage until my kids were old enough to drive it. I didn’t pay registration but I did insure it as a stored vehicle for like $3 a month. Talk to your insurance company. They have rates for that situation.

If your state has a road worthy and/or emissions test required before registration and you are working on it, you can’t register the vehicle.

Its half the cost of your actual vehicle registration and I had a Non Op'd car back in 1982 a 67 Mercury Cyclone that had non op paperwork from 1975 to 1982 and the fee back then was only $200
