I've done a mod or two
I could give less of a shit, I only keep track of it to gauge how well the truck is running. For example, by no means should I get 9 MPG or below, if I do there is something drastically wrong.

I'm glad I have 6 feet worth of bed space and get 20 miles to the gallon. But I could get 22-23 if I drove like a civilized human being between the stop signs. But what's the fun in that. And I do drive 65 on the interstate but that's more or less because I don't like seeing 3k rpm on the tac for a long period of time. Now if I'm going more them 50 miles on the interstate I bump it up to 70. So I do care but I'm not doing a lot to get better mileage

I drive leisurely by mostly keeping under 4k rpm, and I still get shit mpg. I care a little bit, but now I'm mostly curious to see my average than to try to get more mpg than the last fill-up.

I figure from my wheels/tires + sliders and future mods like plate bumpers, etc, fuel efficiency will completely go out the window.

I've been thinking about buying a Nissan Leaf to make me feel better somehow.

That's just an ignorant thing to say.

So while mid size cars have gone from 17mpg to 40mpg, you are perfectly content with remaining in the mid teens?

The cheap gas we've had for the last few months is a short term anomaly based on geo-politics.

The low gas mileage we currently experience is a long term anomaly based on the greed of the oil cartels and the auto makers that have their hands in their ( the oil cartel's) pockets.

Does anyone remember the Honda CRX HF? Ever wonder why they don't make cars(Gasoline engine only - not hybrids) that get 50+ MPG anymore?

I had a 1984 Nissan sentra with a carburetor (no fuel injection) that would routinely get 40 MPG on the highway at 60+ MPH.

That's right, 30 year old technology getting better gas mileage than most of today's "modern" cars.

Ever wonder why the big auto companies don't make cars like the Telsa?

So you're one who does care. Why does someone who doesn't care automatically qualify as throwing money away?

If you care, and your Tacoma doesn't get 25 mpg, are you going to get rid of it so you can drive something that might? You don't want to be throwing money away...

The whole point of this thread was to see what people thought about owning a Tacoma for the sake of owning it, whether it gets great gas mileage or not, and not trying to squeeze every little mile per gallon they can out of it. Many have posted they drive their Tacoma regardless of gas mileage. A lot have said they don't really care generally, but use the mpg to alert them to potential problems. I can understand that. Others have attempted to turn this into yet another 'why the crappy mileage, Toyota??!!' thread, and rant about that.

I know my truck gets 18-19 mpg driving around the city where I live, and 21 mpg on the highway. More than adequate in my book. I've driven a lot of vehicles in my day that got 10 mpg. I didn't care about it then, so why do I now...I still wonder.

It's all relative...if you want a truck the mpg won't be that of an eco-car...if you buy one of the claimed high mpg trucks and then use it as a truck the mileage drops. I use most of my trucks for work, so to a point could care less about mpg (the tundra sees 15mpg on a good day...13 most days)...Love the truck and wish Toyota had put the 4.7 in a Tacoma like they did with the 4-runner...if so, I'd be driving a 13-15mpg Taco!

Just noticed tonight that my wife's 4runner with the V8 gets better mpg than my Taco with the V6. Still don't care my shit looks good.

If they brought back the 1984 Dodge D50 (Mitsubishi Mighty Max) I would get that when gas hits $4/gallon. Its mileage was more than double my Taco and it was just as fun.

    Once again. Ignorance.

Have you ever driven a CRX HF or a '84 Sentra? Those where sub-2,000lb tin cans with no insulation, no A/C less then 90hp riding on 13" wheels. They also are likely spewed pollution unlike anything made today.

I honestly think one is safer riding a motor cycle when looking at crash ratings.

The typical 40mpg Honda Civic today rivals luxury cars from 20 years ago in build quality and refinement. It absolutely crushes them in amenities, emissions and safety.

Ford sells a 65mpg diesel in Europe - but US emission requirements keep it away. If we got rid of all our safety requirements and refinement expectations I'm sure hey could build a 1,800lb 100mpg car for $9k.

As for Tesla. Good for them. They have zero legacy cost, minimal overhead and a 1 (2) car product line. They also sell exclusively in the 6-figure range. Let's see Tesla make a full line up including $17k cars... Then we can play the "look at Tesla" game.

So because a big-block half-ton got 10mpg 30 years ago.... Your totally cool with 15mpg today. Like I said, throwing money away.

I've done a mod or two
We knew what we were getting into when we purchased our trucks. For me the fun of owning and driving this 4cyl (uses as much fuel as a small V8) is off the charts. Every time I fuel up I feel that I got my fun out of the previous tank and I'm happy. BTW I get like 13-14MPG and use way more fuel than my friends 5.2L Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I'm measuring in smiles per gallon, because I run this truck through all sorts of muck, grime, water, dirt, and shitty pavement and still manage to have a good running fun vehicle. I also drive a second gen during the summer for work and think that the 16-17MPG it gets is fine, and I manage to get lots of fun out of it as well (I work for my neighbors and get to take it on trips).

So I ask you, is it truly throwing money away? Or have I gotten more of my money out of each tank with less regret than you or others.

Also it is asinine to think that a motorcycle would be safer in a crash in comparison to even the oldest of econo-boxes. I love riding motorcycles but they are unsafe as hell no matter the rider.
