My integrated nav chip has BLM and FS trails on it, and other state and county “roads” in several western states I took that were literally side by side tracks that were awesome to explore.

My wife’s Rav4 Carplay nav is great on the pavement, but the integrated nav in my 2017 is so nice to have when offroading beyond the reach of the grid.

Incorrect at least to phasing out factory nav. The 2021 & 2022 Tacoma's still have that as a factory option.

Also updates come via satellite connection, Tacoma maps are NOT outdated after two years.

Sorry to resurect this but now I'm curious about apple carplay. Trying to use the push button on the steering wheel to get the phone to make a call. Says you have to have apple carplay enabled but it doesn't show on his. This picture is online:

    ofoXoDStAjoHJVZ5VjQdO5OfWhYU8TbuMSqY85Vd_571cdc547017639df251037828066a43d8edde4e.jpg

However, Dad's skips from Animation to Driver Setting, no "Apple CarPlay" line. It's not that it's not on, it's not there? Does that mean it's not in the head unit, that I can add it somehow? It's on his phone. Acts weird too when trying to connect; bluetooth and it hooks right up to the truck but if I connect with usb cable to the front port it disconnects. Is this thing possessed? I sat and cussed at the damn thing for a while and gave up.

CarPlay needs to be connected to with usb for Nav, Bluetooth doesn’t cut it. There is a setting on the iPhone that changes if your car can or can’t control it.

Wireless Carplay is done with wifi. Bluetooth is used to establish the wifi link. No USB required.

If it's not wireless then a wire is definitely required.

It will Bluetooth music but not the nav. Tbh it’s been a long time since I’ve not connected it, I have springy cord right there so it’s easy. But the nasty part is the phone cuz it’s buried in the settings someplace you would never look at normally.

edit: I think that’s the problem, that’s what my issue was recently.

Yeah, BTing music is nothing close to Carplay. Very cheap speakers have BT.

I love the Nav that came with my Sport. To truly find out if you have look at your home screen and you should see your music on one side and the map on the other. Click maps on the bottom and the whole screen will open up the maps. If this works you got it if not well you don't just saying

I have nav. It's useless. I always use my phone and I don't even have android auto on my 2017.

I'm working right down the street from a dealer today so I stopped in to have them run the VIN, shows it does not have carplay. Will have to play around with it too see if that push for voice command feature will work any other way.

That is the same head unit my SR5 has so you do not probably have integrated NAV. If I tap the nav button with out my android phone connected it will put up an error message that rhe nav app is not installed. With My Galaxy phone connected Google maps loads.

That's likely what you have. You have use apple car play or android auto with your phone.

I agree this is actually a little better than the built in nav systems because the maps are always up to date. My old Jeep had a DVD based nav system and they wanted $149 for an updated disc every year, no thanks.

I don't know if this is possible with Apple but with Google maps it's possible to download the maps for an area to your phone. This is handy AF if your travels might take you somewhere with no or spotty cell service.
