Replaced the radio in my '98 Tacoma and when done, I had no dash lights or radio lights. Radio worked fine but hard to see display. Had a friend who is a Certified Toyota Manly Man who double checked all I had done and could find no cause either. Said possibly ECU was the culprit. Runs fine as is but hate driving at night not knowing what speed I am going for obvious reasons. Any thoughts?

Does the 98 have a dimmer switch you may have accidentally knocked to off, since its not just dash but both dash and radio I would not assume a bulb being out but rather something not plugged in or a blown fuse. I would check fuse first of course since its easiest. On all data I see a dimmer relay listed in the engine bay left fuse box. It does not list all fuses but I would take that to mean there is a dimmer switch, hopefully for the dash/radio, I know 2nd gen dimmer controls both dash and radio.
