The owner's manual just says use 87 or higher. So I'm assuming I should just use regular. Is that what everyone else is using?

I've switched to premium, in my opinion the truck does run better and accelerates smoother. I don't think it has more power or anything but with the manual transmission it smooths out a lot of the dips and valleys of the power band. The truck is only driven once or twice a week so for me the money difference isn't much.

Regular here, I tried premium on a trip there was no difference in mileage or performance. Gas with no ethanol will make a difference however.

Yes, I buy non-ethanol for about .03-.05 cent extra and notice an improvement in mpg.

Having traded in a car that required premium, I'm loving the $0.50 to $0.80 cent a gallon difference in regular compared to premium. The days of premium being $0.20 a gallon more are long gone.

The hell? I don't think I've ever seen premium for more than .25 more than regular. Ever. And I live in the land of stupid high gas prices.

I've tried 87.89.and 93. Runs the same and same economy on all 3. So might as well save my money and run 87

I use whatever the Toyota issued owners manual stipulates.

    I'm my case it's 87FTMFW!!

In my area non-ethanol is priced 10-15% higher. So, the 10% of the fuel with a few percentage points less energy doesn't cause a notable performance or efficiency delta so I save my pennies for hookers and blow.

I ran it on 85 for a good month or two before I realized it should use 87. I did notice a positive difference between the two. Always use 87!

I'm at altitude, so I'll use the lowest on the pump. That will vary from 85-87, depending on the station, because again, at altitude it makes less difference. We're also giving away 25-28% of our engine power to live up here in the clean air.

Keep in mind that when the factory engineers designed and tuned the engine, it was with the reality that it must be able to perform using "crap" fuel. That is, given that these vehicles are sold worldwide, not all locations are going to have "clean" fuel...but the engine still has to perform. Having said that, it may run on 85 octane just fine, even though the owners manual suggests "at least 87". As most of us know, a higher octane fuel has a slower burn and will allow for more timing advance,...in some cases, this may mean more top end power, better fuel economy, and certainly less tendency to have pre-ignition (spark knock) when driving in hot weather, towing up inclines, etc. Keep in mind, under extreme conditions, the knock sensor may cause the ECM to retard timing to protect the engine,...in which case,...lost power. Certainly, "all things in moderation" applies here, as if the octane is too high, it will tend to not burn completely and will potentially increase the risk of carbon deposits inside the engine,...so sorry, 100+ octane race fuel will not result in improved performance,...in fact, the opposite may be seen. Therefore, given how, where, and the ambient temperature conditions the vehicle is driven, one may notice a difference in performance, fuel economy, etc. with different grades of fuel. Most of us will do just fine with 87 octane if simply driven as a daily driver. However, when you actually put the vehicle into "work mode" (towing, under load, etc.) or in extremely hot weather, one may find 89-94 octane results in improved performance.
