Holy smokes. If I have to see 1 more thread claiming better mileage/power out of a higher octane rating I might lose it. Please please please google what octane rating means. It has nothing to do with power content or cleanliness. It has nothing to do with being superior fuel despite the higher cost. People are trained to think more $=better. In this case it's false. It is a different measure of how it responds in an engine. To make it respond correctly for higher compression takes more refinement which costs money. Our tacoma compression just isn't high enough to make a damn bit of difference in this case.
    Ethanol vs pure, yes. Different.
Tier 1 vs garbage, yes. Different.
Tier 1 85oct vs tier 1 93oct. Not different given a standard factory Taco compression ratio.

so side question ethanol good or bad for our engine, I hear bad but not sure. Oh and give the reason for bad or good.

You are a fool if you put in anything higher than spec'd in the users manual, there is zero benefit. It isn't going to do a stock truck any favors. Run the lowest grade octane spec'd and the highest grade fuel available. This means buying Top Tier Fuels from brands like Chevron, not that crap from AM/PM.

And as someone who requires premium, I never see it higher than $0.25 over regular. Well worth it for my extra 100hp. The ability to break the rear tires free on the freeway at 60mph in the rain and light up the traction control systems is worth every cent, every time.

Premium! Truck seems to run better and I get a little better mileage using premium.
And premium is less then .20 cents more then regular.

I'm just gonna throw out there that this isn't a great habit to get into. For safety's sake anyway

Where at in WY? It's cause you're surrounded by 80 mph interstates.

Agreed, though it is usually not intensional. I stated it as a datapoint for the relative real world power difference.

When I had my FJ I tried regular and got SHITTY fuel mileage. Switched to premium and ended up getting alot better mileage. So I just tend to run premium in all my rigs. .20 cents a gallon more isn't going to break the bank for me. I don't care to give regular a go. But that's just me, everyone has there own experience and beliefs on the topic.
If someone's on the fence on what to run, give each a try, at least a couple tanks and see if you boost any better results between them.

Premium here in southern California is only .20 a gallon more at most gas stations, I've never seen it more than .30 over regular. I have to use it because of my s/c, I guess the trend hasn't hit here yet (hopefully it won't)

The problem here is that when people run premium to "test fuel mileage" that right foot gets mighty feathery... It's not on purpose, but it happens. People can run whatever they want as it is their money, but it's not like the truck is changing the timing or anything. Supposedly there are better detergents in premium gasoline though :notsure:. Unless you are running blended w/ethanol regular fuel vs non-blended premium... The premium variant on the same blend fuels should actually yield lesser mileage due to the other items in the fuel to resist detonation. I'm no engineer though, I just hang out here.

Common misconception but not true, the detergents are not rated by octane. If it is a Top Tier fuel, like Chevron, then all octanes of the fuel are equivalent. The higher octane just has better resistance to detonation, which is needed in high compression or boosted applications. I specifically call out Chevron because when auto manufactures announced the new top tier fuel standards, Chevron was the only one to meet the standard without reformulating. Everyone else went scrambling to 'fix' their product.

In theory yes, you are correct. You should always run what the vehicle was designed for.

Nice. There's a handful of guys in Casper, and if you ever make it up towards Gillette hit me up.

I'll definitely do that. I haven't met anyone since I moved there so it would be cool to meet some people and maybe do a little off-roading

what about ethanol treatment, to keep water absorption at a minimum?
