If 90 cost 20% more and you get 10% better MPG, what's the point? In 2016 these computers will do a good job of keeping you running on whatever the MFG. says it runs best on. == If you want to piss away your money on 90, go for it! But you're doing just that, Pissing away your money. If you've got that kind of extra money, help out sick little kids. Every little bit helps.

I like premium fuel and a can of seafoam. Makes me happy and lil red doesn't bitch about it.

Well. If it makes you happy, go for it. If we all did what was "practical" we'd mostly all drive a Prius. But we do what makes us happy. Just don't claim enhanced performance. Anybody with smarts will definitely call it out.

If you've only gone 18.5 miles at 27.5 mpg why is distance to empty only 172 miles? There are inconsistencies here.

Because when you get to the destination that you arrive at and shut the engine off and start it up to leave the computer reset itself to zero again.

That is the trip screen. He probably has around half a tank of gas left, meaning he can go another 172 miles before filling up. That has nothing to do with how far he went on his last trip and the mpg that he got.

Well since there is a little reading difficulty...
At the top of the screen in the picture is says.... TRIP SUMMARY. In which I believe is the whole summary of the trip you just traveled from the time you push the brake pedal in and push the little start button to when you stop and push the little start/stop button again. The info I'm the screen is the TRIP info for my cummute to work, with having the same cummute home. With using my premium and seafoam combo ( could all just be in my head) I average 24-27 driving to and from work Mon- Fri. TANK averages have been between 20-22 MPG.

I understand now I assumed that was for the tank not a trip. I didn't read the fine print.

This started with the most recent drop in gas prices. Here in Virginia it can be even more, I've seen .50-.60 per gallon difference.

Not bad nowadays, most manufacturers use materials that are resistant to breaking down in the presence of ethanol, so using no higher than E10 is fine. If you dont use your vehicle very often (like months of non-use and big swings in ambient temps), ethanol can be bad because it tends to absorb water, which can make the engine run crappy. Also, it contains less energy per volume so you get worse gas mileage overall.

so it's a moot point for a daily driver effectively.

I do find it humorous that the epa wants better mpg's all the while reducing mpg's by mandating ethanol.

What about how much the computer can advance timing under hard accelaration? What about cam timing? I take it you have looked at the programming in the ecu to see if the computer will adjust these to take advantage of higher octane? Only way to tell is looking at the programming or maybe Dyno.

the computer would have to be able to detect the octane rating of said fuel, dunno if it can

I believe that it uses the knock sensor for that. Advance timing under hard acceleration until an unacceptable amount of knock is detected. Believe me, I'm not saying that I know, but I don't believe ANYONE other than Toyota knows for SURE.
