Does it makes sense to sell a 3rd gen and buy a 2nd gen?

Lol I’ve done this twice. Got myself a 2009 AC 4x4 5spd with only 83k miles for $10k. My 2020 TRD OR was ~$550 a month, $39k total. I liked it a lot, but I regretted buying an automatic and I lost my job recently- so I figured it was a good opportunity to get rid of it. I’m happy with my “new” little 4cyl.

Nothing wrong with the 4 bores..and that blows bout the job, but that's a good reason to make a move.

Sell the 3rd gen for as much as you can. Check Carvana for their current price. You missed peak market by about a month.

Buy a beater Civic/Prius/Camry and drive it for 2 months. When the market tanks again, pick up a 2nd gen. Hold onto the beater until spring and then sell it then.

Yes it does. Back in March when the country was locked down a 2013 TRD OffRoad DCSB was easily had for $20k. Straight from Florida with 40k miles and completely stock. A month ago it would go for $29k. Now the prices are dropping.

While the Taco market never "tanks", I am predicting the relative taco tank in the next 2 months.

I appreciate the empathy, but I’m actually happy about not having that job. Lol. I hated working in a cubicle- I just need to get a job working as an auto mechanic, it’s the only work I seem to like.

Well yes, everything got cheaper at first, I just meant Tacomas are always relatively expensive no matter what.

Why in the next 2 months? I like flipping these trucks so that would be good time for me to get another one, lol.

What? If you like flipping the trucks, just stay in the 3rd gen.

I am also confused now.
What did you think I meant when I said “flipping”?

I plan on keeping my current 2nd gen (the 3rd gen is already gone) and buying cheap (Under $10k) 2nd gens when I find them, fix a couple things, and then sell them for about $1k-$2k more than what I have into them. It’s easy money and I know tacos well

Agreed. I have a Camry. Drive it to work when I’d rather drive my truck, but at this point selling it would be a loss. This is considering insurance etc to keep the Camry. It’s such a reliable and good commuter, I could never justify getting rid of it. It’s a 4 cyl. Just a thought, you drive something less than ideal until you get the house figured out, as the house is much more important and an actual investment. You’ll miss the truck but it’ll be ok in the mean time.

I would like to trade in my Camry for a wrx, but have to suppress these thoughts when thinking about what is best financially for my family. I keep the truck, and the Camry will get me to work and with 27 mpg for the next 20 years if it comes to it. And then I still have my truck to play with and for truck things. Again, the wife has a Jeep JLU.. so that’s it’s own money pit I wouldn’t recommend.

the plan to but a 2nd gen and supercharge and change the front end of a 05-11 to a 12-15 is not a wise financial choice. It would be a sweet truck, but if your priority is the house that type of plan is more for someone who wants to play around.

The term flipping is just to buy and sell with the pure intention of making money.

So with that, you should be buying stock SR5 or base 3rd gen Tacomas, installing a 6" lift with 35" tires and then selling. You'll have a relative infinite market for this for years before you lose interest.

Also, your flipping comment combined with the first sentence in your first post:
Resulting me in stating that you should just stay with 3rd gens and flip them.

I’d love to flip 3rd gens, but I can’t buy them with cash unfortunately. I’m 23. Lifting new trucks sounds a lot nicer than just trying to fix stuff on rusty old 2nd gens lol.

I did have a good laugh though, I thought that you thought I meant I literally “flipped” the trucks and totaled them often.

and I would agree, it would be much better to wreck a 3rd gen... LOL

Sometimes a blessing in disguise, but always better to leave on your terms versus theirs. I'm a cube monkey as well, almost 20 years now.

Kind of the same with my truck..one bonus is the fuel mileage. 23MPG for a truck ain't so bad.

I'm seeing older Lexus GX and Land cruisers go for better prices (better value) than Tacoma's and Tundras, which doesn't make much sense to me.

I think I am just going to grab one of those for 10-15K.

    Still thinking about it.
I have nothing to add to the OPs discussion at this point but your post got my attention. Camry. I wish my lifestyle were conducive to driving one. I got old enough to realize that it’s a perfect car and not just a commodity car or ‘boring as a refrigerator’. The new Camrys are badass performance-wise and probably just as reliable as the older ones.

Secondly, just curious about why the Jeep is a money pit. What year model is it?
