ya a 285/75/16 and a 285/70/17 is the same size in terms of overall diameter and width which is what you should be worried about with the JBA. If he clears the JBA with 285/70/17 w/ -10 offset, then you should be able to as well.
People can clear it if it rubs a little by changing the camber when they do an alignment. However, you start running into other problems if you don't zero camber and toes out. Mostly faster uneven wear on the tires though.

None yet but soon all black.
He has the same wheels -10 like me but its 285/75/16 and I’m 285/70/17 but basically almost the same setup and wheels so I should be fine and not rub the UCAs. I emailed them just the make sure but I think since he is fine I should be ok

    **********************************************

Thanks for this post this reassures me even more. I just bought Methods 316 (17x8.5) with 0 offset (4.75" BS) and some Toyo AT3 (285/70/17) and per JBA Offroad they should clear at full lock. Here is the question I asked:

Have wheels on order and I'm kind of panicking.

My plan was to use 285 70 17 Wildpeak AT3W on my 2012 tacoma 4x4 with a 2.5 inch lift and JBA UCAs
Wheels on order are 8.5 x 17 Zero offset
    JBA says they should fit...
There website says they will fit with KO2s but also says a KO2 in that size has a section width on 11.2" and a tire site says they are 11.5"

    So If I go from a 5.18" backspace on a 245/75/16 to a 4.75" backspace on a 287/70/17 (on 8.5 x 17 zero offset)
I think the new wheel will 11 mm (0.43") less backspace (further out), the new tire is .85" wider on each side of the tire, so the new tire would be about 0.42" (7/16") closer in horizontally and will move about 1.25" closer vertically

Based on the picture below, no way ibn hell that will fit
I could try to reorder the wheels with a -18 offset but I am not convinced that would help.

    Am I missing something?

One problem that was bugging me with JBAs recommendations were that it assumes all tires of 285/70/17 are 11.2" width and if you go to the specific tire manufacture's website (including BFG KO2) most 285/70/17 are 11.5" in width in terms of All-Terrain. To answer your question. Mathematically speaking: No the 11.5" width tire of sizes of 285/70/17 will not fit with a 17x8.5 & 0 offset wheel.

This is simply my speculation. If anyone with these specs can chime me in please do so since on the same boat

The only other size wheel in the model I picked out with a smaller backspace is 9.5" -18 (4.54")

Do you think that would make a significant improvement in clearance or would I need something else for a 285/70 17?

Technically yes it should work. If you follow the sequence on JBAs recommendation the 17x9.5 should be around 5.5” BS at max.
I would call JBA and you’ll speak with the owner directly.

    I’m personally getting Ray 10s 17x8.5 with -10 offset.

Don’t know if this will help but I just installed a very similar set up on my 13 TRD Sport.

    My wheels are 8 x 16 with 0 offset 4.5 backspacing and I have 285 75 16 KO2s.

Suspension is Biltstein 6112/5160 set to 2.5in and JBA UCAs.

I went with 16s for the whole “more tire, less wheel” appeal.

There is no rubbing on the UCA, there is plenty of room. I don’t think you’d have any trouble with the 8.5 wheel. Had to remove all mudflaps. No issue rubbing so far but it is close and I could see rubbing occurring at full turn in off-road environments.

I have been talking to them on email, here is some of the conversation

"I can`t speak to your cardboard "tire" but our fitment chart is based on our own real world testing, feedback from dozens of our JBA Installer shops and a few thousand customers so it`s a good general guideline. Doing the math as your doing now sounds great but in reality were dealing with complex 3D shapes and specs that are all over the patch. Example: Most tire manufacturers say a 285/70-17 is 11.2" wide on an 8.5" wide wheel. You`ve got 11.5" as the mounted section width. BFGoodrich says it`s 12" (!) on the same 8.5" wheel width. Which is correct? Where on the tire are you measuring and with what? Did you know some wheel manufactures measure width from the inside of bead to inside of bead (net) and others measure their wheels from outside of rim to outside of rim (gross)? Some measure backspacing to the face of the barrel, some measure it to a raised lip. You get the idea.

So, having said all that, why order brand new parts that will just barely fit (or maybe not quite)? You may want to change your wheel order to a 4.25" or 4" backspace or the same 4.75" backspace and 9" width and sleep soundly knowing you`ll have clearance to spare. "

So still thinking if I want to go to an inch wider wheel to get these Black Rhino Rapid 17x9.5 -18 1795RPD-86140Z12
or go back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the info. I bet that looks nice! the wheels I was looking for don't go down to 16" but I do think that combo would look better.

Based on @Abebaca the 17x8.5 & 0ffset with 285/70/17 should be just fine.

btw SCS Ray 10s I wanted are in back order and they don’t have an ETA.

I think at this point I’ll be the guinea pig and buy my second choice of wheels Method 316 which are 17x 8.5 & 0 offset

    @pfoxgrover
I can see your frustration in that email. Both you and JBA have good points.
I’ll be reporting back results for the Methods described above

yeah, I've had wheels on backorder for 3 months and now that I have the UCA and the link kit on there I feel like I'm back to square one on the wheels.

I'm thinking 9.5" wheels on 285 might look way to square.

Also don't want to get stuck with expensive wheels and crappy spacers just to get them to fit.

So that's back to 4.75" backspace that puts you right on the borderline. Wish you could try before you buy...

As you can see with my set up, I’m definitely going to have some rubbing in off road conditions at slow speeds and maneuvering obstacles. I’m not planning on doing much of that so I should be ok for daily road driving.

I’m not sure how much of a difference the set ups y’all are trying to run would be compared to this.

Update: I got my Falkon Wildpeak AT3W P285/70R17 installed with my JBA UCA and 8.5 inch 4.75 backspace wheels and as predicted by JBA they clear. This picture if almost full lock. With the steering wheel 100% turned and held there (although I didn't take a picture), it still cleared by almost 1/8".
