I had a leak coming from my speaker into the cabin and getting onto the carpet under the floor mats...it leaked during heavy rains for about 6 months before I noticed it and got it taken care of.

Now I am paranoid I smell mold when I get in the car...if I press my nose to the carpet and smell, I think I can smell something. If my nose is a few inches away from the carpet, I can not smell anything though.

If I do have a bit of mold, will it go away eventually, or will it just always be there?

Is there any way to tell whether there is mold under the carpet without actually pulling up the carpet?

They have dogs that can sniff out just about anything, but your best bet is to just pull the door sill piece and take a look with a flash light. Could always spray a 4 to 1 solution of bleach to kill it off and eliminate smell.

Its a truck not your house in the walls. I have had cars flooded with water and no mold. Just dry it out and drive it. These days everyone is paranoid with black mold and being watched. Fix the leak, dry it out. Drive

    It's alive. Don't feed it.

And quit putting your nose in the carpet. Heaven only knows what your shoes have put there.

    Thanks all for the feedback.

What is the door sill piece to pull away? This is my first vehicle and I don't know much about cars. What am I looking for?

I'm in my late forties but have lived in cities my whole life, riding subways with no need for car.

Thanks a lot for the pic, so just pull that piece off? Does it just snap back on or anything special about putting it back on?

Not sure on your mileage or year, but I’d ask your local dealership.

I’ve seen a handful of 3rd gens with mold due to water leaks and they’ve all be covered under warranty. One actually ended up being bought back by Toyota due to the severity and cost to repair.
