i recently purchased a 2002 Tacoma Prerunner with 2.7 liter 4 cylinder and automatic transmission. It is an sr5 with TRD package. The slot where the diff lock button is supposed to be is open with nothing there. Inside of the slot is a wiring harness that is not plugged in to anything. I have tried doing research and seen that apparently all 4 cylinder Prerunner automatics do not have diff lock. Is this accurate?

Welcome to the forums. What body style do you have?
Correct for the most part. You can add a full time or part time locker if you like.

Crawl under your truck and look for the actuator. No actuator no locker.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
4cyls basically never had them but if you want to be 100% sure... The drain plug for the open differential will be on the passenger side and it will be on the driver side if it has a locker.

4 cyl TRD 4x4's were optioned with a RR diff lock, I believe. Just not pee runners

For the most part 4 Cylinder TRD's never came with Rear Differential locks. I looked through a bunch of old Toyota brochures and the 4 cyl TRD models have an asterisk next to them stating that only v6 models included the locker.

EDIT: 4x4 2.7l's came with them, as I've come to learn. PreRunners did not.

I had a 2002 4x4 TRD Tacoma which has the rear locker. It had the 4cyl. and manual tranny. So they do exist, I don't know if it was offered on the 4cyl. Prerunner.

The ONLY TRD combo that didn't get the locker was 4 Cylinder, Automatic, Prerunner (2WD). All other TRDs received the locker. It is not just a 4 cylinder thing since all 4x4 4cyl and manual transmission trucks that came with the TRD package received the locker.

    Pretty much stock right now
I'll add this: My first Tacoma, a '97 2.7l auto extra cab TRD, had a locker. That's about the only option it did have. At the time, I didn't know what a TRD was, let alone a locker, and I never used it. Wish my '03 had one.

Just look at your rear differential. There should be a little box thingy on it like this.

It if looks like this, is has a locker. If not, well, it doesn't...

So when you say it doesn't have the locker button, does that mean there's a hole in your dash, like some one removed either the switch blank or a button? Weird...

True, I should have been more clear, that pic (stolen from the interwebs) is of a factory TRD locker.

Thanks for the replies. There is not a locker on my rear end. I assume that the trucks that didn’t come with the locker had a blank over where the switch goes, and sometime before I bought the truck the blank came off.

I have an oem locker switch I’d like to sell if anyone is interested. I replaced it with a Carling switch. Does anyone know if where I can find a oem switch hole cover? Sorry a little off topic....

That would be rad! I live in Marin and work in South SF. Let me know if your looking for any parts and I will try to return the favor. I may still have a few random parts in my garage.
