Toyota dropped the ball making the AT's. I think the 4.30 gears should have been standard on both models

It's a shift range that limits it to the selected gear or below as we've been telling you, not a pseudo manual that overrides as you've been saying. You can read it here in the manual yourself.

Like i said it will shift automatically to the gear you have it selected to in S mode 3rd/ 4th/ 5th when you start from a stop and put it in S mode it will shift automatically until it get to the set gear you have selected. So if you drop the gear selection down to 2nd it will only shift to 2nd then you can manually upshift. With actual gear lock you can set it to 1st gear and have complete control of the shifting

S is not Sport like a lot of people think, it is "Sequential", and it limits the top gear. If I am crusing on the highway in S6, and drop it to S5, it limits it to 5th gear. If I then go back up in S6, I am limited to 6th gear. The truck is always pushing to be in the highest gear, so it will shift back up.

It is not a tiptronic/manual mode, in S4 I am not in 4th gear, I am limiting the transmission to not go above 4th gear. That's all.

S6 != D, I don't think. It behaves like it, but I think it does something with some sensor or maybe with diffs in S mode instead of D. However, for driving on the highway, for all intents and purposes, S6 = D. I could also be wrong on this, I think I read that somewhere unproven, not from Toyota, so that could be misinformation!

The 6A transmission has 2 overdrive gears.

(This is for the 2020, BUT I believe the 6A transmission is the same for all 3 gens).

And, comparing to the 2015, which only had one overdrive gear (5th).

What our trucks do is when cruising along in 6th, when it "suddenly" needs more power, it will drop to 4th, out of the second overdrive gear as well, instead. So it constantly will go 6 > 4 > 5 > 6 repeat. That is the gear hunting. The truck always wants to be in the highest gear for efficiency, BUT will drop to 4th when it needs power on an incline.

5th gear is still an overdrive gear, and still gets decent MPG. I had a trip where I was in drive and it went up and down and all around. I looked on my home screen on the HU and the MPG was doing the wave. I dropped it into S5 and it was then stable for the entire time range on the HU. There were times where I was revving higher than I would be in 6th, but overall it would only be doing 5 > 4 > 5 for gear changes, and had a lot more available power in 5th so it wouldn't drop to 4th nearly as much.

Long of the short - try S5, efficiency will be, let's say, -1 mpg at the most, but much better to drive and way less shifting.

THAT'S WHAT IT WAS! Yes, S6 != D as it cancels the AI shift.
