If the clutch is working properly then the compressor drag should not make a difference. I would say it’s not worth the hassle.

Ac definitely uses a small amount of the engine power when it’s running, don’t know how much. I doubt if HP ratings by Toyota are done wirh the AC on so it’s more a matter of you won’t lose the little HP with AC running if it’s off or not running. Just turn it off if you want.

    Short answer is no.

If you are looking for clever ways to save power, delete the fan and put in an electric fan with controls.

Personally I wouldn't do this. The stock fan clutch pulls a ton of air and is a lot more reliable than an aftermarket electric fan setup. I would take Cooling system reliability over MAYBE a 1% power gain on a Tacoma.

I guess what's the end goal here OP?

My a/c wasn’t working in my 85 PU. I took off the belt and increased 2-3 MPG.

sounds like a 4 cyl owner... fwiw, there is usually an override at WOT to shut the AC compressor off.

    I mean, technically speaking, yeah.

Are you going to notice, or is that going to turn your truck into some tire burning monster? No.

Having a functioning a/c and thereby not having my nuts drenched in sweat is WAY more important than some phantom .001 HP increase.

The answer for more power you are looking for is a turbo, lol...

That sounds like you had a compressor on its way out causing substantially more drag than a fully functioning unit would. When I relieved my Cherokee of DD duty I stripped the ac and mechanical fan clutch off in favor of dual electric fans. The largest fuel economy bump I saw was 1-2mpg driving in traffic and maybe 1mpg on the highway.

    100%

Although the other end I had a stuck clutch on my 89 4runner, sounded like a semi truck, the 3.0 did nooooot like that.
