Does rubbing on a lifted Tacoma feel like ABS when cornering at speed?

I have a newly lifted Tacoma with 34" tires and a 3" lift.

I know for certain I get rubbing when going down hill and turning corners at slow speeds like 5MPH.

However, I'm also noticing what I *think* is rubbing at higher speeds like 35MPH when going around corners on windy hills.

It *seems* like it might be ABS but I think it might be rubbing or both.

It's disturbing at first as I wasn't use to it and it scared the heck out of me.

I think what might be happening is that it *sounds* like ABS but it's actually rubbing.

I've also seen that the ABS *is* definitely engaging because I can hear the brake pedal pulse inside the cabin.

The shop was saying that I could need a zero point calibration but if it's not ABS that won't fix the problem.

How it might be BOTH of these issues and maybe even the rubbing at higher speed is actually triggering the ABS?

The rubbing itself is bothering me enough that I might look into trimming my fenders to give it like another inch or so.

Anyone have this issue and solve it?

I had this on my 09. I figured it was the difference in speed of the tires going around a turn that triggered the abs. A taller tire would increase the difference in speed that the computer thinks it’s seeing and indicate wheel spin. I have no professionals telling me this, just something I figured was happening

sounds like you might very well have more than one problem. that's a lot of lift and tire, did they extend and properly resecure the ABS wires?
Did they chop the cab to fit the tires?

Might be best off taking it to a good offroad shop, I mean when you go with that size lift and tires, you are opening yourself up to that option, or tinkering and having to quickly become the expert.

The sound and feel of tire rubbing and your ABS should be easy to differentiate. If you have never experienced your ABS activating, I suggest taking your truck to a low traction surface and slamming on the brakes and/or try drifting with TRAC/VSC engaged (the default setting in 2hi).

I did take it to a good offroad shop which I'm pissed off about. I'm trying to figure if this is something they should know about or this is a different problem.

    > did they extend and properly resecure the ABS wires?

This would cause my current problem?

It seems that if this as a problem that it would sever the ABS wires?

    Rubbing aside...

If you can replicate without braking, it's not ABS; it's stability control(VSC)...
    ABS works off speed sensors...
VSC works off speed sensors and steering wheel sensor...
Any daslights illuminating during the event?

Sounds exactly like VSC activating. It sounds and feels exactly like ABS going off and will "surprise" you. You will need to get VSC recalibrated

Is this the zero point calibration the shop was talking about?

This is why I'm thinking it's two things. The rubbing and the VSC calibration.

If all you did was lift it and put 34s on you're probably rubbing like a mother fucker.

Depends on what kind of tread style your tires have

Not sure, I'd ask the shop if that's what they meant.

If there's no cab mount chop, then this.

Rubbing at speed will have a ratcheting sound like abs but it will be very uniform.

    Check build thread!
You'd notice if a wire was severed. You'd have a Christmas tree on your dashboard.

    Also this.

Tire size isn't going to change relative differential speeds. If an outside tire needs to travel 5% farther in a corner, it's going to measure 5% faster regardless of tire size.

What changes with tire size is the actual vehicle speed vs measured vehicle speed which creates an error in the calculated yaw rate which is compared to the measured yaw rate. If these yaw rate values deviate too much VSC intervenes trying to correct an over or understeer skid.

I’m no tire expert but is a 34” tire a tall 33 or a short 35? Never heard anyone talk about mounting “34s”. What are your tire specs?

A 34 is just a 34. It’s not as popular of a size as 33s or 35s, but they’re becoming more popular in the last few years and more manufacturers are starting to make them, especially in metric sizes. I have 285/75R17s on my 4runner and they measure 34x11.

When I turn sharply into a parking lot and maneuver over a storm drain area, I sometimes get this noise. I think it is the traction control coming on momentarily when the brake is automatically applied because the computer is confused with the different tire speeds on a sharp bumpy turn. I have no rubbing that I can find. I have one turn I make all the time and notice this noise. If I go slower, doesn’t happen.

You have that backwards, larger diameter tires will reduce the RPM difference between the inside and outside tire while cornering.

The post had it the wrong way round, but larger tires will reduce the difference in RPM (not %) between inside and outside tires, and ABS works off RPM.

This is probably exactly what it is.
