Or do I need to place it on a block?

Yup. If you place it under the LCA / axle.

You're DEFINITELY gonna need a block.

    Don't forget the jack stands..

You only need a block if you are trying to reach the frame. if put under the rear axle between the diff and tire it should reach. and placing under either front lower control arm is fine as well.

In an emergency sure it would work. Jacking up the truck enough to change a tire using the axle as a jack point with a contact point as small as what you get with a bottle jack is just sketchy as hell. I wouldn't want to do a brake job like that. Just my $0.02.

Your lift has no effect assuming you have shocks with the same extended length, but the 33 in tires add about an inch. At least one person has reported the stock jack works with 35’s.

It’s a lot safer than all these people using high lifts

if you are doing maintenance, get some jack stands.

I do not own a high lift jack for that reason. (They do look cool though)

And it's A LOT easier to throw a jack stand under the truck than to jack up a truck that fell off a bottle jack onto your driveway with a wheel off. Ask me how I know.

This is why I can't condone sketchiness with a bottle jack. I am also lucky to still have my leg.

Last time I put a block under my jack, the block broke in half, lol. I thought it was a perfectly fine piece of 2x6 (fresh from lumber used for building a shop). But yeah, obviously it's good to use a jack stand. Unless I hear otherwise from the OP, i think he's probably just meaning if he gets a flat tire. Most of us don't carry a jack stand for that situation, even if we should.

Hi-lift has been great for me doing maintenance on my truck. My ARB has cutouts for it, so a quick lift on my driveway (good straight up angle with a flat surface), then jack stands underneath. I know they can be dangerous, but most of it can be mitigated through proper use.

Woah! Glad you are OK. Yeah, if I don’t have a Jack stand handy, then I put the spare under the frame near where I am working as a emergency stand and later swap it with the flat wheel when I am out on the road and have to change a tire.

Whenever I am outside the comfort of the garage and jack stands while swapping a tire I always slide the dismounted tire under the frame as a little added insurance.

EDIT apparently I typed too slow

Having a block might help level the jack from uneven ground

Yup, this is strictly for emergencies to change a flat if on the road. Sounds like it would work although maybe not ideal. I just don't want to carry a big heavy jack around. Maybe a 2x4 would work.
