I would think that the TC chain would not spin as you're basically putting the TC into N in 2WD, yet I may be wrong?

It shouldn't because you can spin your front driveshaft by hand when the truck is parked. If it does spin, it's because things around it are spinning causing it to spin free. It shouldn't spin with any power though. Just my observation though, I could be way off base as I've never torn apart my transfer case to study the inner workings.

You thinking that's the noise you're hearing?

Yes , in the video the noise sounds exactly like a chain going around a sprocket , but I was in 2WD

Going to put it on my buddy's hoist this morning and try to figure it out

I would give this a test for ya but I have a gear driven TC. What I have found sorta backs up my thinking but again may not be correct?

"In short, your drive shaft out of the centerdiff/transfer case should NOT spin under the engine's power while in 2wd with ADD"

I agree the driveshaft does not spin , that was evident in a video I took of the underside of my truck , I was wondering if the chain turns in 2WD

ie : when the front driveshaft is disengaged in 2WD , is the chain stopped or does the chain turn still

Yea and being that the front DS is not "spinning" in 2WD I would believe that the the chain drive would be disengaged as well? I think this to be the case as I know that my gear driven case make no whine when in 2WD? Again all speculation?

Makes sense , I was just unsure what was disengaged in the transfer case in 2WD

    Thanks

I'll post back what we find later this morning

You can test this easily enough. Through the X-fer case fill port, you should be able to see the chain. Have someone look inside and then spin the front DS by hand. If the chain spins with it, then you know if the front DS is not spinning, the chain isn't either. If the chain does NOT spin with the DS, then you'll know that there's a very good chance that the chain is spinning under power even when the front DS is not spinning.

There was a rather heated discussion about this same question going on over at TN. I've seen quite a few lifted 4WD trucks going up the hwy. that have their front drive shafts spin at a small fraction the speed of the rear -- apparently due to friction within the gear lube in the front diff. leading to spinning the ring/pinion gears a bit. Since the front DS is connected by the chain's output shaft it might be that the answer is yes and no. No in theory, but yes in reality albeit somewhat slowly within the transfer case.

Edit: Oops, missed your comment that the condition was front DS disconnected. You might want to look at the pic at TN. The question being could gear lube friction within the TC rear output shaft still spin the chain slowly in 2WD?

Try checking the play in the drivers side CV. I was having an issue just as said and though the steering wheel stayed true (No vibes) I too was getting the same thing as you described in your OP thread. (01) was the fact that I had the ADD locked so the drive train was spinning in 2WD (02) the needle bearing was soooo toast that is was exasperating the vibe.
