Why is OP under attack for 'refusing a rental'? I bought a truck, if I come in for a problem with said truck, and need to do truck things in the near future, I'd demand that toyota gives me a loaner truck.. How is this even marginally his fault?

I hate to point it out...but first line in the "warranty and maintenance guide" supplied with your vehicle:

As part of our ongoing commitment to our customers, you are eligible for transportation assistance [1] under the Transportation Assistance Policy, if your vehicle [2] must be kept overnight for warranty-covered repairs for any of the following reasons:
    • The warranty repairs will take longer than one day to complete [3].
    • The warranty condition requires extensive diagnosis.
    • The parts needed for the warranty repairs are not readily available and your vehicle is inoperative or unsafe to drive.
For additional details, please refer to the Warranty & Maintenance Guide or speak to the Customer Relations Manager at your local Toyota dealership.

[1] The loaner vehicle may not be the same model as your current vehicle.

Not much you can do by kicking and screaming here, rules are rules!

Thanks!! I was just asking about the repair itself. Toyota did tell me I did not need a truck when they decided mine was inoperable, sales never mentioned I did not need truck when buying. I could have bought two corollas for the price I paid for truck. I was going to go out of pocket to rent a uhaul f-150 from commercial lot in greenville to suit my needs.

I get that. I'm not saying he's legally entitled to a truck. I'm saying that he's justified in his reasoning. I would have the same stance. I've never been in a situation where I couldn't get a decent rental. It's normally pretty easy on the dealer's end to put you in something that works, especially if they're subbing it out to enterprise. I really dont get why you'd defend the dealership on their bullshit clause.

If you have a Land Cruiser, does that mean you get a Land Cruiser rental?

If they dont have any available, what else can you do? Is it really that difficult to fathom someones preferred vehicle is unavailable?

Agree also. I was without my truck for a few days, and I got what I asked for. A Tacoma. But if they didn't have one, there's literally nothing you can do. They can't materialize a truck for you to use. My dealer had one out of 20 rental cars as a Tacoma. I was lucky.

OP did the right thing. Rented out of pocket if he NEEDED a truck.

Because they won't get paid by Toyota (the one who made that BTW) if they don't follow the rules. There's a lot of complex things going on behind the scenes with warranty work.

Do you argue with the police about how speed limits are not appropriate when you get pulled over for speeding? Rules are rules, seems pretty simple to me.

It's already been addressed. Will it leak? No. Is it the repair according to the TSB? Also no.

Nothing more you can do until you hear back from the service manager.

There's nothing wrong with using the FIPG/ RTV, unless the paper gasket instruction specifies not to due to incompatibility of materials. Most gaskets are fine with it and some techs will do this for "insurance". The FIPG/ RTV fills voids and holds seals better than the paper itself, but is frowned upon at times as it doesn't look as clean or it appears like someone from Pep Boy's or some backyard street "mechanic" just slopped some sealant on it as a band aid. That stuff appears properly applied as the "squish" is uniformly messy and even (while not pretty), if the tech applied the proper bead size and torqued, which it appears it has (maybe a bit too thick of a bead ). Some "mechanics" will massage that crap on and smear it everywhere (as if if they're caulking) making it look much worse. My experience is with HondaBond, which I'm thinking is very similar to they Toyota Formed in Place Gasket, which doesn't cure as hard as regular off shelf Permatex or Loctite branded RTV. There's different types of RTV for different applications, just FYI.

It's good that the service manager has a record of it and I'd leave it at that. If Toyota Corporate says it's not the proper procedure, then that contracted dealer is in some shit and they'll have to redo it. I'd still ask if it bothers you.
It shouldn't leak at this point and if the appearance is an issue, the FIPG/ RTV, once vulcanized peels off super easy with your finger since it's really not much that came out. A small razor blade lightly run along the steel edge will help make it easy to pull off too if the finger method isn't working out.

FYI, Toyota formed in place gasket comes in black or orange variety.

OP said he was going to rent a truck out of pocket. He truly needed a truck. What I'm saying is that instead of helping him with the problem at hand - potentially shoddy repair - people are saying it's his own fault for needing a truck.

I don't get that, I don't understand the logic behind that reasoning. Its a sidenote to the issue at hand that should have had no bearing on any of the responses.

And yea, if I get pulled over for speeding you bet your rule following ass I'm going to try everything I can to get the ticket dropped. I find that often times a nice conversation can get two disagreeing people to find common ground, and that when that fails many rules can be slightly bent when pressure is applied in the right places.

In regards to the repair.... RTV is often used on sealing engines and other various components. Even GM switched to RTV on small blocks on the front and rear intake seals because when done right, it works better/lasts longer.

If I were doing it that way, I probably would have trimmed things up just so it looks nice, but as long as the mating surfaces were clean and dry before applying, you probably have something better than the paper gasket. It's unlikely that there are chunks of RTV floating around in the diff as it will just cure in the squished bead. The only real drawbacks to this are:

    1. Overall position of the carrier to the axles is very slightly different because there isn't a gasket acting as a spacer.... probably not a big deal.
    2. They didn't make it look nicer.
    3. It will be harder to remove the carrier when you go to stick in new gears and arb..... this is because RTV does stick well.
    4. Will this be a warranty issue later as it's not per the Toyota instructions?

We're not saying it's his fault for needing a truck. We're saying he's at fault for feeling entitled like he SHOULD be given a truck because he brought in the truck - that is the impression we got from his OP. That's not how rentals/loaners work at dealerships. They give you what is available, and if you refuse, then tough luck, find another car to use. (and he did).

I haven't had my truck for a month, and wont see it for another month at best. Took the rental and letting Toyota do what they gotta do at their time table, besides, keeps the miles off my truck!!
Take it to another Toyota dealer or a mechanic and see if they think it's done right!!

I took what they had at the time, and told them when they get a truck in I'd like to switch it, because I need a truck, few days later I got a call and they had one. Can't expect them to have a 100 trucks on the lot waiting, geeez
