    Not a very good pic of it but I made this bed cover out of strapping and 1/4 plywood and covered it with ballistic nylon. I had it on 3 different trucks and it still lives today covering my woodpile. :) You might try something like this?

    I think if you took your time and did a good job, maybe a strong frame, high quality snaps, it may come out ok. Look at how some of the soft covers are made and steal a few ideas. When push comes to shove, it's your truck, if you like it, thats all that matters. You will never please everyone on this board with any mod you try. Some will love it, others will hate it. You have to make the call.

    I don't think it looks retarded, but I'm not sure it looks good to me either. But it's your truck. It might turn out real good.

    This is the thing about being an innovator;

    if it catches on you are hailed a genius. Patent it and you are off to the races. Sell the patent to some big tonneau cover company....

    if it doesn't catch on, blows off the truck, causes a pile-up on the freeway, you get charged for causing said accident; the idea could be called "retarded" if this happens...

    Oh ya- if you think it may look even slightly retarded (hey you posed the question) definately don't wear a hockey helmet while driving with that on the back; it will surely seal the deal..

    You need to ask the OP that haha. I'm assuming he doesn't use the bed all that much if he's planning on doing this. My only concern would be blocking the view through his rear window.
