I would say that a fluid exchange was most likely performed by flushing the fluid through the cooler lines, otherwise it's fraud. Most machines operating manuals will state that the fluid being replaced by the new fluid amounts are accurate. Using this method should be followed up by checking the fluid level. This requires tech steam or similar tool and is checked at specified transmission fluid temperature. It probably wasn't checked after the exchange. This would be considered laziness unless the work order stated a fluid level check after the service, then it would be considered fraud. Proving anything at this point would be next to impossible. Have the fluid level checked and inspected. Good luck

Might be time for a fan and a larger transmission cooler
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/transmission-coolers.526283/

As far as the original question , I do not beleive the transmission was serviced according to the procedure .
The proper procedure requires the pan to be removed , filter and magnets to be inspected and cleaned before you flush .
As others have mentioned , no signs the overflow bolt was checked for proper level ......someone taking a couple risky shortcuts at the owners expense if the truck is no longer on warranty

I'm a Toyota Master Tech. It is rare for us to do a drain and refill, but we do trans purge/flush/service frequently . Typically a trans service is performed by hooking a flush machine to the trans cooler lines and running the engine, which pumps the old fluid out and new fluid in. Inspect the cooler lines and you should see some evidence of the clamps being removed. In most shops, anyone who cuts corners or doesn't perform the work at all, is quickly called out by other techs, especially on a gravy service.

Typically, the flush machine will put the same amount of fluid into the trans as what comes out and rarely do we have to add additional fluid. However, the fluid level should have been checked as a precautionary measure. As long as the vehicle is shifting normal, it should be fine. I'd tell the service advisor that there is no evidence of the fluid level being checked and request that they check it.

So sad that Toyota makes you guys flush without removing the pan first .
How can you possibly see whats in the bottom of the pan without removing the pan first ?
What if the truck owner did 30 neutral drops or jammed the shifter into reverse 30 times a day ? Its going to be full of metal
It doesnt matter if the trans has 2000 miles or 200,000 miles
The bottom of the pan is the septic tank of the transmission . Clean it before flushing or you force the crap in the pan through the valve body .
How do I know this ?
Because speedy lube shops that risk flushing without removing the pan first have lined my pockets for years

I understand your concern, however we have used this procedure for at least 20 years and I've never had a single customer experience transmission issues after a flush. Provided that the services are performed at the normal intervals, we rarely see trans problems. There is the exception of the torque converter recall on Camrys, but that's a manufacturing issue. The option of doing a drain and refill is there if the customer requests it, however it only gets about half of the fluid out of 5he trans and it it more expensive for the customer.

My opinion comes from 30 years as a trans tech and involves trucks that are north of 60k and out of warranty .
I am somewhere between 5000 to 6000 flushes in my shop
With this being said . I always remove the pan , clean the magnets and filter , add fresh fluid to the pan and then flush .
Toyota dealerships have sent a few mishaps over the years but not as often as the big 3 .
Aisn Seiki builds a solid transmission for Toyota

I thought flushing the trans is not good. It’s always better to just drain and fill.

In my opinion flushing is fine as long as certain requirements are met
Has the trans been properly serviced during its lifetime ?
Have you removed the pan and filter and inspected the contamination in the bottom of the pan ?
Dont want to risk flushing the crap in the pan through the valve body
Have you removed the transmission filter and inspected the filter for contamination ?
Have you inspected the magnets laying in the bottom of the pan ?
Once these requirements are met it is safe to flush the remaining fluid from the torque converter and cooling system

I am glad you asked .
In my shop , We follow the same flushing procedure outlined by ATRA .
Remove the pan first before flushing regardless of mileage
If anyone is not aware , this is the automatic transmission rebuilding association

I think the service kit was “a cleaner” and a “conditioner” probably added to the fluid.

You have to watch what they add as a cleaner or conditioner .
99% of the cleaners and conditioners contain strong acids
If the acids are left inside the transmission fluid , the acid will destroy your new fluid .
Lubeguard is by far the best shit on the planet and only became available to the general public a few years ago .
Lubeguard was only available to transmission shops for the past 20 years . Top off with this conditioner and it stays in your new fluid . You dont have to flush it out and as a trans guy , I can tell you it works amazing . All the 2nd gen boys are already fans !!
Now you guys can grab it during a transmission service

Question does the transmission have a filter? And if so why wouldn’t it be changed at the same time

There's also a possibility that they disconnected hey transmission fluid line and flushed the transmission with a machine. That's how they did my old tundra.

I talked to some dude who does his this way on a 2nd gen v6 and doesn't bother checking the overflow just puts back the same amount he had gotten out, has over 200k miles says never had an issue(that he knows about). I would just call the dealer and ask them what procedure they used to flush it, for the $273.67 plus tax cost I would make sure they had really did something.
