Manufacturers aren't putting fill/drain plugs on differentials anymore? Seriously??

No way there's a 'lifetime' oil for something like that...and when it does fail, which it will...that could easily happen on the highway or on a windy mountain road and be fatal for the driver and passengers. A locked up rear end is no joke.

I can understand 'lifetime ATF fluid' (not really, but it makes more sense than lifetime gear oil)...something about this just isn't right at all.

$12 is enough rebate to actually invest the time to do it! Where can I get the rebate form? I use a lot of Mobil 1 in this family's cars.

I send all my oil off to black stone for my camper van. Was considering it for my Tacoma. Ill send in the oil from my second change to see how it's wearing in.

Been buying it that way the past 5 or 6 years, they put the rebate up on their Website a few times a year. I usually buy 2 jugs even if I don't need any, still have a couple sitting around from the last offer.

I was told at 5K... and the webpage for Toyota Owner's says 5k. This is the first I've heard of 10K. Because of Toyota care, I'll use it at 5K, although I liked a suggestion made in another thread about checking bolts to make sure they were removed (i.e. verify they actually did the work they said they did).

The manual says 10k, 5k is the severe use schedule. Toyotacare is only going to give you 2 free oil changes.

Most new BMWs only have the fill bolt. So if you want to change the fluid, you have to suck out the old somehow and pump in some new. And it's really tight in there, it's impossible to suck all the old out. I don't know where all the metal shavings go after it's broken in - the magnetized drain plug is supposed to capture that, which is gone now. I guess it all just spins around in there for it's "lifetime"...

The thing about new BMWs is that by the time the "lifetime" diff craps out on you (say 150k), literally everything else (electronic gizmos, computers, turbos, software, sensors galore, countless plastic bits and pieces crammed into a broiling hot engine bay, etc.) doesn't work and fixing the car would cost exponentially more than it's worth. So, what the hell, don't ever change the diff fluid.

Not sure about other manufacturers. The taco seems to use the same basic components (other than the G3 V6 motor) that they have for decades. I'd guess they would never get rid of both plugs on the diff or transfer case, as that would be just plain stupid for any vehicle that might be used off-road.

I picked up 6 quarts of Mobil 1 at Costco for 26 bucks after an automatic 10 dollar rebate!

As you may already know, Mobil 1 is a Group III synthetic, as well which is barely a synth since the base stock can be mixed with Dino and still be called a synthetic. That’s why it’s so cheap.

Amsoil, Redline and Motul are Group V, I know, there may be others. I like Redline gear oil, the motor oil is expensive. Bought a few jugs Penn Ultra Plat which I’m using until it runs out.

This thread reminds me ever so slightly of all the fellas on gun forums debating polymer framed pistols despite the fact the polymer frame will in all likelihood be around after they're dead and gone.

Not saying you'll kick before your Tacoma does, but....at my current pace of 8,000 miles a year or so it's a toss up for me.

I’m driving the Tacoma about 3k a year (weekend hobby work) and I may never change my gear fluids. Engine oil every 2-3 years.

One year is a totally random, but round number that the auto industry has made up to get you to the dealer at least once a year. Why not 9 months? Why not two years?

Oil only degrades with use/contamination and extreme age (decades).

Agreed, it’ll most likely go to 200k-300k on the cheapest Dino oil.

I’m just a fan of synthetics for other reasons, ie cold weather starts, extended drains (gear oils), etc.

Kinda like no greaseable ujoints in the rear anymore (I installed them myself). No one seems to care about that, but dropping an axle on the freeway or off road can be a pain even dangerous.

Costco usually has Mobil 1 at about $25-$30 for 6 quarts. I just bought some of the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 for my Taco's first oil change. And yeah, I am doing it at about 1000 miles.

I think that only applies for certain retailers, and Costco isn't included
