I just got an 07 Tacoma TRD 4 door with 35,000 miles.

Every automatic I've owned when you take your foot off the gas pedal, the vehicle coasts as if it is in neutral. My Tacoma slows down, there is alot more resistance than I think there should be. I can feel the varying degrees of resistance as it is shifting down through the gears (I think that is what is happening), also, if I switch in to Neutral, it will coast extremely well, when I switch back to D, it immediately starts slowing down again. Think of it as not completely disengaging the ebrake.

Is this normal? Does your truck do this too? If so what the h3ll is wrong with Toyota? This can't be good for gas mileage? (I've only filled my tank a couple times - I live in ND where it is still below 0 and I average 16 mpg).

Its normal. Toyota designed it to help engine brakeing

And the engineers gave us with the manual tranny a built in delay before you get any engine braking, it took me quite a while to figure out how far ahead I need to lift my foot off the gas when I want to slow down.

mine slows down as well when I lift off the gas, more resistance than in any other vehicle i've driven, assume its normal.. engine braking

keep in mind automatics still use gas even if your foot isnt on the throttle (beyond normal idling fuel usage)...unless you ride around dropping into neutral all the time.

Even in neutral, the engine is burniong fuel.

yeah, its newtons laws of physics.

that why I put the () with the "even beyond normal idling usage".

Mine doesn't slow down either unless I tap the brake and then the engine braking will kick in, but if I don't tap the brake when going down a hill it will coast (no resistance). Don't know if it is messed up or not but this is how I would prefer it.
