2010 230k I do 10k mile oil changes on it, Amsoil 10w-30 5 quarts and 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil, use an oversized filter I notice I loose a little less than a quart in this time. That's pretty normal though.

I also put some crosshatches on my dipstick with a dremel to be able to read it.

Just changed the oil in soon to be my kids truck.2008 access cab 4.0, 4x4 auto. Father in-law passed away. 404k on it and was at the full mark before I drained it. I know he doesn’t check the oil... he also had gone to his buddy for his lube jobs. Quakerstate was all that was used when he was alive. I just put in super mobil.

To thin the 10w-30 (40? I forget the amsoil signature with the yellow cap) down a little and to remove varnish, it really cleans the engine up gently.

It's like 2000 grit wet sanding to seafoams 80 grit.

    Plus it smells so good!

Your already running a top notch oil. Why ruin it with MMO. Plus the MMO is thinning out the oil. Amsoil by itself will do all the cleaning you need. I’ll bet that almost qrt your loosing is the MMO burning off. I added MMO to 0W30 once in my beloved 3.4L and lost that qrt in 3000 miles. Never burned before.

200k and I burn nothing (well, it burns SOMETHING) but not noticeable on the dipstick at 7500mi oci’s

Had a 2009 VW gti (FSI motor) that burned a lot of oil at low miles- around 30k. Volkswagen issued a statement that claimed something ridiculous like 1qt per 1000 miles was acceptable for that motor... I traded it in on a TDI. And we all know how that whole deal worked out... so fast forward to a 200k mile Tacoma!

With modern-day machining methods and the precession, accuracy, and repeatability of these machines, I find 1000 miles to a quart of oil in a new vehicle hard to believe. I always suspect a quality issue, poor design, material issues, or poor engineering. The question becomes: How to prove it? Most consumers don't have the finances to tear into it.
I know VW has had its share of issues, I had a TDI and the stepson has a CC, I think the engine is a 2.0 turbo, not sure which had some serious work done to it under warranty. Never did find out all the details. All I know it was leaking oil real bad.

My 2010 Tacoma doesn't appear to use any oil between 5000-mile oil changes.

The Chevron Havoline ProDS Full Synthetic in the 6qt smart change box Is my GO-TO “cheap” oil.

$18 bucks At Walmart for 6 quarts of a premium Full synthetic. Can’t beat it! 2 day delivery or in store pick up too.

You should be losing just a little between changes otherwise the oil ring clearances are too tight. But we're talking like a 0.001" film that's flashing off. So a little isn't concerning, especially with the extended intervals they're recommending now, as long as its consistent. My 2008 at 100k miles will be a bit lower than the top dot at 5k with 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum but I can't say it started exactly at the top dot each time, so could be close to zero or as much as 1/4 of quart. Probably about 1/8 of quart I'd guess.

Now our 2002 2.0L Jetta definitely requires the right 5W40 VW spec 502.00 oil otherwise it consumes probably a quart per 1,000 miles like that. So maybe that's VW covering their asses by saying it could happen if you don't bother reading the manual or the back of the bottle. Using the correct oil there's very slight consumption on 5k intervals.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
I have 180k on my 2009 and I've never once had to add any oil. It's so good I have to remind myself to check it!

2013 DC 4x4, 90,000 miles. Burns or otherwise loses about a quart evert 10k miles since new, no noticeable change in consumption. I use the stock 90915-YZZD3 filter and change it every 5k, the oil gets changed with Rotella T6 5W-40 every 10k, mostly because that's what we always have lying around the shop as it'll work in bikes and diesels. =)

2012 with ~118k miles on it now. I do 7500 miles between changes with synthetic. I usually have to add only a few ounces (1/4 quart max) between oil changes).
