I tried that once. It would have made my insurance go up by more than 3x or something like that. Enough that over 5 years or so I could have replaced it all with just the extra premiums I'd be paying.

When I totaled my 2G I had receipts for about $5,000 worth of stuff as well as a cap that I didn't have a receipt for (purchased second hand). I was given approximately $900 for the cap and just about $2,000 for the rest of the items as they had depreciated them by some value. I was also able to remove items from the truck that I did not claim on the insurance. It wasn't dollar for dollar, but I was able to get value for items.

    Your situation may vary.

EDIT : I did not have a rider on my policy.

The first thing that you need to do is read your policy contract. It will usually tell you if there's a limit or exclusion etc

If you are shopping around, ask to see a policy contract

you have to pay extra and list your items, otherwise they don't.

I have Jake from Statefarm too. Lol

My agent said that it’s a good idea to keep your receipts as proof of the mods. No riders are necessary (according to her).

My brother just had an accident (someone hit him) and he has a ton of mods on his Audi A4 and has a custom parts rider and they offered him shit for his parts even wi the rider. 150 for his rims (1500-1800 set) for example. Did not seem to matter that he had a custom rider or not. They gave him the option to buy the car back for $400 after they totaled it. Which is what he did.

I also had an accident a few years ago (car before the tacoma) and the adjuster basically told me they wouldn't pay anything for the custom mods but it was not theirs until they picked it up. I spent that xmas in the rain pulling off suspension, brakes, wheels, etc. and gave them a "stockish" car back. Not ideal but getting them off will probably maximize your value.

I have Esurance and pay something like $30/yr extra for up to $1,200 in mods coverage. Its a sliding scale so I can pay more to increase it or reduce it and pay less.
