Alas, you are probably correct. What do you think the inside of a Tacoma muffler looks like?

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
I used a Fumoto for quite a while until I knocked it loose and lost a little oil driving on a trail in the woods. Didn't trust it after that.

I use a razor blade and scrape the residue off the pan and the plug when I do an oil change. A little messy, but no big deal. Scrapes right off.

    Mine sticks to the pan.
Usually cant get it with a fingernail. Pop it off with the socket after the oils done draining.

Dont feel bad op, several times I couldnt tell by looking or by feel and had to climb out from under my truck for my dollar store readers and a flashlight.
Sometimes its still there, sometimes it already fell in.

Installed an engine for a relative on his pos not a tacoma and 1st oil change he stacked gaskets not realizing they stick and ran er dry and wrecked the brand new rebuild.

Also pull filter and open fill cap up top before I go under then lay there till its done draining, reinstall drain plug THEN climb out and finish up.

Ive been known to SQUIRREL! get a little um distracted and kind of forget the drain plug is out and start refilling after slappin on the new filter...

Until this thread popped up, I never worried about that washer. Still don't. And that $34 is still in my pocket.

Only reason I care is because of what my uncle did...and imo one time use crush washers are cheap.

That and I just cant get dawg to bring me my glasses and flashlight so I can verify if its still there or not and Im getting too old for this climbing out from under stuff.

If I need a bally tho, hes always up for that!

I do not recommend changing the oil in a Q7 then. The plug is right over the subframe and it makes a giant mess. I should probably pick up a fumoto with a nipple for the next oil change on it.

I own 100 acres of woodlands and drive in it. I run over small branches all the time and sooner or later my luck would run out and a branch would snag that fumoto and drain my oil before i ever knew it was coming out.

Stuck to the plug. I’ve been using the same one that came on the vehicle for 14 years and doesn’t even leak a drop.

Have no fear, if its not a 3/4 ton or a Tacoma my wife will own it. She chooses her vehicles and she can be responsible for the maintenance on said vehicle. (Although I don't mind driving them).:crapstorm:

Not saying it can't happen but with a relentless skid plate it is very protected and in the thousands of offroad miles I've been okay so far.

    back to bone stock.
    great responses.

oil changes are second nature to me..but I kinda think that is when dumbs hit happens. when you're all confident and moving on memory. I have a solid routine. but that washer is annoying..I try to minimize the number of sit-ups needed to get the job done.

Mine always sticks to the pan. I take it off and wipe it down, then reuse it. Mine is a copper gasket.
