My wife was away at OTS when I bought the truck, so she likes to remind me regularly that "(I) didn't consult her when buying a truck that (she) can't drive, a couple weeks before our wedding." I've tried to teach her a few times and we get far enough that she's doing laps around an empty parking lot, but it always goes to hell the minute we try to get into traffic and then she won't try again for months.

To be fair, we'd decided that we were buying a truck and set a budget, so I traded my manual jeep in on a manual truck.....:tinfoilhat:

You don't need the gas pedal in 2h either if you know how operate a standard tran.

The people we are talking about here are learning...and don't know how to operate one.

Hope I don’t get flamed for this...

He does. Actually we don’t even have an automatic vehicle right now. 17 trd pro 6 speed, 08 GTI 6-speed, and 73 mini 4-speed. Lol VW bought back our only auto, 2011 Touareg TDI, which we bought the Tacoma with. On the hunt for a Macan GTS at the moment.

Fair. This is how I've taught people in the past. Have them only use the clutch to start the truck moving.

MACAN GTS, FTW. Test drove one for my wife and she really liked it.

That was my thought too, especially at such low RPMs. Agreed that I didn't want to chance things with my clutch. I don't have the garage space or mechanical know how to replace one myself, and I can't imagine paying somebody to do it is cheap.

True. Learning the friction point and how to use it is the most important part of successfully driving a manual transmission vehicle.

Haha that’s what we said since we first heard one, then test drove one. Just needed to get a vehicle we can use to tow/haul with before getting the Macan, so now we are free to do so. Will likely sell the GTI and hopefully have the Macan in the next couple of months.
Also moving from Florida to MA/VT/NH area so the taco will finally have some fun!

Same here. The first lesson should always be to let the clutch out slow enough that you don't need the fuel pedal.
Trying to get someone to learn how to synchronize the release of clutch and addition of fuel is always a disaster in my experience.

My girlfriend knows how to drive standard well enough to use mine, but wouldn't buy one for herself.

I reluctantly tried to teach my GF's son, he was doing good starting but every time he stopped he would forget to push the clutch in even with me telling him to, no more for him in my truck even though he asks all the time.

When my brother and I learned, my old man just bought a $500 beater and let us thrash on that for a summer. Then he had a shitty old truck to haul mulch in when I was done.

This is the best way to learn in my experience. My little brother was struggling when learning to drive stick (being taught by his father) until I took him out one day and just had him do this over and over, getting the vehicle moving with clutch only. After that, he was fine.
