I have the same noise on my 17 MT. I thought I had read on here where it was normal, like @kaijac03 said. I'm like you, though. I feel like it has gotten louder as time has gone on. I believe it is the stick bouncing around. Move your stick around while parked and you'll probably hear the same sound.

I’ve heard a funny rattling on my truck some days (‘18 MT).. then I took the receiver out of the hitch.... rattle gone! I felt rather silly but.... ;)

i can reproduce that sound if i quickly release the clutch before hitting a bump, but only then. yours is nuts, and obviously not normal. pure speculation now, but i also don't think anything's getting damaged. either way I'd personally be pretty unforgiving about getting that shit 100% fixed, because even if i knew for absolute certain there's no problem, i just could not drive like that.

Sounds like the slack in the driveshaft gears. With your truck off, get under it and try to turn the driveshaft side to side, it makes the exact same noise. I've never heard the noise while driving though.

I had and have the same noise. Toyota found it was a loose heat shield. They snugged it all back up but a few weeks later the rattle is back. Have an appointment Saturday to fix it again.

I had a TSB performed on my truck when I had my rear diff gasket replaced. I told the service advisor I was hearing howling noise at 55+mph to try to sell him my rear diff leak. I got the truck back with a replacement heat shield for the 6MT and I had no knowledge of A TSB for this existed.

That is the same noise my M/T makes when going over speed bumps etc with clutch in. As you said, never does it under load.

Maybe it's a placebo, but it seems less noisy right after I grease the driveshaft zerks :notsure:

    Edit:

I'd also like to add that my truck has made this clank/clunk since new, and even after both my transfer case and transmission were replaced (dealer was trying to track down the drivetrain howl before the TSB came out). Not trying to rain on your parade, just adding my experience.

That's it! It was rattling against the exhaust pipe.

Yeah, mine makes that sound but only like when going over speed bumps. Nothing that radical.

That noise sounds hollow. Not a transmission noise. I would bet money on it being exhaust, heat shield, loose shock, u-bolts... etc

Toyota Corporate followed up with a phone call on Thursday to say that they still maintain that the neutral rattle is a characteristic of all 3rd gen Tacoma, AT & MT, though, they did suggest that my case is louder than most.

I reminded them during the call that I don't buy the characteristic story, because it's rock solid when it's cold.

If you can get through it, I put another more elaborate video together

I've noticed this since new, happens all the time when coasting to a stop below 20mph on rough potholed Michigan roads. So far dealer gave the usual "it's normal" response. Interestingly enough, it doesn't happen when in 4WD

Yeah, it has been there since new - not as bad - rarely noticeable, this summer it's been much different.

That is interesting, I don't think there's a difference between 2wd and 4wd for mine, it rattles both ways.

Toyota is continuing to look into it they're also looking into shifting issue between 1st and 2nd that their in-house tech noticed, I didn't even bring it up, but every now and then I can't get the bugger into first gear at a stop.

Your 1st gear issue is something which I've had on multiple MT vehicles from multiple companies. Depending on the exact orientation of all the gears when you come to a stop, it is possible that you can get a block-out, where it won't directly slide into 1st. For me, shifting back into 2nd, then into 1st again clears it up. It also helps if the truck rolls a couple inches, but usually that isn't possible because the automatic hill-hold is engaged

Oh wow. I thought it was just me when I can't get it into gear either.

Mine does this as well. Only in neutral. Sounds very similar to taking the stick and moving it left and right aggressively while not in gear. Subbed to see if there's any fix.
