Check your Trans mounts maybe? I still think it sounds like the drive shaft. With your truck off and in neutral. Go under the truck and try to twist the drive shaft back and forth. The sound you'll hear sounds very similar.

I checked drive shaft, twisting the drive shaft makes sound in the differential, not really the transmission. It's sort of the same rattle but from a different source.

And while hitting bumps with the rear axle makes the rattle, it's definitely sourced from in front of the drive shaft, likely in front of the transfer case.

Yeah, it happens, no big deal - funny that the dealer made it an issue haha.

Thanks for all the replies & solid advice.

Toyota Canada followed up by closing the case as normal operation and reiterated that the automatic transmission will rattle while coasting in neutral over rough roads.

I knew it would go that way, so, I followed up with the shows the condition isn't there until it warms up. I don't know what that they'll do with that information.

Sounds like the diff is banging your exhaust pipe. It coincides with the diff movement

I also felt it was coming from the rear end travel.

Either way, I hope the OP gets a resolution to this issue with minimal hassle. Keep us posted man!!!

Rear axle movement definitely causes the rattle, but it's under the middle of the truck. It might even be more prevalent when hitting bumps on the passenger side over the driver side, thats harder to say.

At the end of the day if this is normal operation, I think anyone considering the MT should know that it comes with a factory farm truck rattle.

I'll keep looking into it, and I'll mention it every time I'm at the dealer, too.

Might be a long shot but check the chains on the spare tire

I think you shouldn’t give up man. It’s not normal. If it was, I would have been at the dealership everyday or put in the psych ward. Lol!!!

My 18 Pro M/T made more noise than that in neutral or clutch in on any rough surface. Was noisy even in gear. Drove me nuts. Was just horrible and really made me feel like the truck was junk. My 17 auto is completely silent suspension wise or drivetrain wise except over the most roughest terrain at speed.

This was one of the main reasons i traded in my pro for the OR. To me the transmission support is too soft and as the transmission is warmed up, it softens up the bushing more and more and allows too much drivetrain slack. Just my opinion.

Autos are never in neutral or disengaged (clutch pedal in) though. So I have no doubt they don't experience this. Mine makes none of this noise in gear.

    2017 SR Auto here.
I frequently mess with my wife and go down our road in neutral to see if we can make it into our driveway. I have never heard a sound like this. Escalate.

There are variables here. The AT may not make this sound even when in neutral because the transmission itself is different as well as coupled to a torque converter. I imagine that if no AT could reproduce this noise that it's likely the issue is in the MT unit itself. While the vehicle is the same AT to MT is a bit of apples to oranges in a way. If anyone can reproduce this noise with an AT I'd love to hear it, since that would help with troubleshooting the cause.

Mine rattles like crazy, and as someone mentioned, the rattle is identical to the sound you get when you aggressively move the shifter from right to left. I'm thinking something is loose on top of the transmission. When I crawl under the truck and start banging on stuff, I can't duplicate the noise.

    The search continues.

Sure is annoying, and it makes the truck sound like a POS.

I still believe it is related to the shifter hitting something inside the transmission housing. I'm trying to get video to upload of the sound to see if it compares. Will update when it's done.

Try this and see if it sounds familiar.
With the truck parked, while standing outside the truck with the driver door open, grab the shifter and move it left and right.
Its pretty audible from outside the truck.

that information, along with everything else, should now be pushed to Toyota Corporate. after the dealer closes the case you can walk with all that and open a new one with Corporate, and they can do something about it... probably in your case a warranty extension if the FST has already reviewed it.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Check out the video I posted in the update above.

    UPDATE:

Here ya go. This is the best I can do with a phone hanging out the side of the vehicle. Wind noise is overpowering, but you can still hear the rattle if you listen closely. The bigger the bump the louder the noise.
