2007 4L 6 cyl 4x4 174000. When it started, I could just shift in to 4th manually then back to 5th and it was good. Now it won't shift to 5th gear looked at many utube channels to try to figure out, they were some help. Also now the transmission will not always down shift when stopping suddenly. Any ideas?

Uh well. Save up. It doesn't sound like a cheap fix, whatever it is. Sounds as if something is "sticking", or worn out in the transmission. If the guys can't help you here then sounds like a question for the service manager at a repair shop or Toyota dealership.

I'm thinking shifting selnoids would be the fix. I'm a handy person and love to work on vehicles. Just want to make sure I'm on the right track.

I haven't had mine long enough to know the workings of the transmission yet. Hopefully you will get some answers from some of these guys that have BTDT.

    Start simple.

Check the fluid level and condition.

My guess is you'll find a mess. 'Lifetime' isn't.

When you shift the shifter into each position, do the indicators in the instrument cluster correspond correctly with the shifter position?

What concerns me is the OP is saying that it doesn't automatically shift down now while braking.

Mudinfun, all indicators are correct when shifting manually. If I slow down at a normal rate, the tranny shifts the way it's supposed to, but if I have to jam on the brakes it won't down shift until in fully stopped then it's a jerk.

Do what Clearwater Bill said first then. Low fluid can cause all kinds of problems.

OK, was figuring it's probably an internal tranny problem. Just wanted to make sure the NSS was doing it's job correctly. That's all I've got.

I was on a similar page in my mind as well. Shame on me. My old pops always told me to start with the simple things first. I don't know why in the #### I can't ever seem to stick to that.

Checking fluids won't hurt, but it sounds electrical to me. We had a mouse build a nest under the hood of our car while we were on vacation a few years ago. When we got back and started driving it the transmission was acting up. I'd never, ever suggest going to a dealer for repairs not covered by warranty. Find a good independent shop you can trust. Mine just needed a wiring harness replaced where the mice had chewed through a wire.

Your right fishingpups, start small then move on. Fluid first!
