The brother in law should've at least offered to pay for it or the op should've asked.

“Almost $100 / hr” is high, but... Took my dirt bike to the dealer in San Francisco yesterday for warranty work. Their shop rate? $175. Warranty work is all they will get from me.

Brother in law is definitely paying for repairs. And I'm driving his car in the meantime

Keep a small spray bottle of Pine Sol in your truck (or in the bed). When you park where you think critters might chew on your truck spray/squirt your wheel wells and under chassis.

Animals don't like Pine Sol including bears. I always keep Pine sol with me when parking up in the mtns.

Another option is an ultrasonic dog repeller, maybe battery operated? I have not tried one yet.

Squirrels got the fuel line on my beater Saturn about 5 years back. Neighbor recently mentioned to me he noticed the local squirrel population has diminished. I said it must be the fox.

No you cannot splice that wire. It has to have the correct resistance. You can't even stretch that wire.

Sure ya can (well maybe not with a butt splice). I've done work on a couple ABS lines (extending with some CAT5 cable, or repairing one that got over stretched) and still works great.

It's a dealer and it's in San Fran one of the most expensive cities on the west coast yet somehow the techs are supposed to eat the bark off trees and sleep under a bridge.

Dealers like to CYA so they're not splicing shit. If this was my own truck I wouldn't want it spliced

Oh I completely agree. The rear sub harness is about $150 last I checked when I was looking at replacing mine with OEM and easily worth the cost as opposed to splicing. I spliced mine for other reasons, to make it longer. My post was just in response to hispi, and wasn't really relevant to the thread. It's all a moot point anyways since OP has a plan of action and BIL is covering costs.

As others have said, that’s quite steep for an OE brake line and ABS sensor. I got extended SS brake lines all around for $180.

Totally understand that you don’t have tools handy though.

That's good to hear because in the manual those wires a specific resistance and any deviation will light up the dash. And, I understand why they did it... VSC...

Stealership is also doing a brake system flush. Im sure their price on that is half the cost.

That is the challenge around here. I feel for the dealers and techs but also feel for my wallet. It's a tough situation all around. "Happy" to pay when I need to, but it does force me to do work on my own when I might have used a shop otherwise.

Regardless of people’s thoughts on it being the BIL’s responsibility to pay, it’s pretty awesome of him to do so. He could argue or be an ass about it and it seems he isn’t. Doctor or not, not everyone would!
