I just bought a 2021 Tacoma long bed and thinking about adding a camper shell, but, I only really need to be able to travel three hours each way once a week (freeway miles) with my large border collie, keeping him secure and safe.

Any recommendations for a type of crate that would be ideal??? Something to keep him comfy and secure. I’m assuming by keeping it close to the cab of my truck, the wind will not be too much for him. I travel 3 hours each way every weekend. He is too hyper to keep in the front with me.

If you have a double cab, a crate will fit
in the back with the seat(s) folded down.

Crate is secure and weather/extreme temps aren't an issue.

Ruff Tuffs are top notch crates.

    This^ is key
Idk if the coli is young or not but this is key to a good relationship between you both.
Sure there are plenty out there.

Do you want to eventually have your friend in the truck or just be in the bed?

If in the truck then there are back seat "hammocks" or cages that work great when you reach that point.

Securing a cage in the back other than drilling holes in the bed could be a difficult task. A bed mat is a thing but not very secure.

Small or big dog, I would not wanna get smoked in the head by one of them if something unexpected happened. So for everyone’s safety, they’re always locked up in the truck or suv

That's a horrible idea. What time?
I'm more of a fan of the backseat if you have room. While I'm confident in my driving, it's others I don't trust. I would hate to have Tessa ejected from the bed, despite my best efforts to secure a crate, during an accident or quick movements trying to avoid one. I have a seat hammock and a harness / safety belt attachment. She gets to move around, is secure in the cab, and gets climate control.

3 brands I have looked at extensively for my 2 springer spaniels.

Yeah huge difference in pricing depending on what you want. All seem like solid builds and can't go wrong.

I had a diamondback tonneau and you can strap a kennel to the top of it. A nice metal box kennel with louvers allows you to control airflow depending on temp to keep the pup comfortable and safe. It’s a good way to travel with muddy, crazy dogs. Usually I just give in and let them climb all over me and make my cabin a mess…
