If you need to give him something to be able to take him to the vet safely, Benadryl will make him sleepy. Give it about an hour before the visit and it's 1mg per lb. The childrens benadryl come in 12.5mg and the adult is 25mg.

so, i called the vet and got a pill (5) acempromin, (ace) doggy trnqulizer, like xanax or valium for dogs, to chill him out, so funny watchin him stumble n wobble when walkin. i was able to ccollar him and hi got verrry upset but he had collar, this was monday, appt with vet wa today, so he can get shots and whatnot. the vet got him muzzled and put the harness on him, so so far things are getting better, took him for a walk today, first time in loong time about 45 minutes....and now i feel that since i can bur his energy he will start behaving more....ill will update as it goes...thank god.!

You have to make sure that you reassert yourself as the pack leader. The reason why he is being aggressive to you is because it likely caught you one time and continues to push the limit because he noticed your reaction. Like others have said you need to be firm with him. If you can get a pinch collar on him that helps. Also one person mentioned to hold him down to calm him down with you hand on his neck...that is how a dominate dog would handle him.

People tend to forget that dogs are not people and should not be treated like people. Dogs are pack animals and once you realize that and become the Alpha dog/ pack leader he will continue to be a menace.

I train with dogs in sports and have seen some dominate dogs ride their handlers and when in the presence of another handler that is more dominate I have never seen a problem.

Another thing is you should always take action. If you come home...you greet the dog when you want...not when he wants too. You go through the door first, you eat first... and so on.

    Good luck...keep us posted.

Leave the leash on him for a while so it bothers him and he gets used to it. And every once in a while when you are in the house sitting around just grab it and hold on to it as if you were outside on a walk. He will eventually forget that it bothers him.

My mom has a female rat terrier who acts just as you say yours does. She will growl constantly whenever there is another dog in the area. You could not ever make her stop. A dog training friend said that to grab her by the nape of the neck and lift her feet off of the ground while telling her "NO". He said that she would squeal and squaller like you were killing her, obviously not seriously hurting her at all. Did this once and it amazingly worked! He says when you seperate a dog from the ground it make them completely submissive.
Something to try if you want.

In addition, walk through your house and do not veer around him. Make him move out of your way.

    Good luck

Glad too see you got him harnessed

I saw mention of giving dogs people meds and wanted to pass along a warning.

NEVER Give them Tylenol, it can kill them because even tiny doses destroy the liver and kidneys.
